So went to pick up my moose from the local Butchers tonight and they can't find it. The guy (butcher) called me this AM and said it's ready for pick up, told him I'd be there at 5:30 PM. So I get there at around 5:30 and pay the cashier for the cutting and then the kid can't find my moose.
What to do????

UPDATE ; The owner had put it in the milk cooler instead of the normal freezers....moose rib steak tonight!! :d :d

Could be that someone was in earshot when the butcher made call, then had a friend come in half hour later to claim the order...

Yeah, seems like no body really gives a damn any more. Hopefully they will sort it out. I'm think they must have given it to some else that had a moose in getting cut up at the same time.

Yikes, I hope this works out for you but it sure sounds like a real fuster cluck. Hopefully it was just mis labeled with the wrong name or something, however I don't know how that would get sorted out either. Here's hopin the outcome is in your favor.

How big of an operation is this place? Most game cutters that I know only do upto a dozen animals at a time so it's pretty hard to screw up an order , but if it's a fully operational butcher shop with lots going on I could see this happening. I hope it all works out for you.

I don't think they do all that many moose in a season but they are a local butcher shop so they most likely do a lot of beef and stuff. They also do a fair bit of custom orders for a 1/4., 1/2 or complete beef or pig and sell packages with beef pork and chicken at different weights.

If he can't find it... just add up ALL your hunting costs for the Year (including your time) and give him a bill for it!!! That'll get his butt in gear

The family business was a butcher shop and we did a pile of game as well as countless beef and pork orders. We never had a screw up like that. In all likelihood the boxes with your moose are sitting in their freezer and the bonehead that looked for them was too lazy to move some boxes. I'm sure the owner will sort it out.

Since moving away from home I have used other shops and gave up on them as mixing all the game together seemed to be the norm. This and your story makes the point for doing your own processing.

Years ago I had a butcher give me likely his buddies muskeg injected meat that looked like it was quad dragged over 30 miles of swamp complete with pine needle in it after processed.Thing is my bull was shot in a grain field now where near such vegetation. He pulled the switch. Big shock ...he went out of business.Harold

Once took a pig to a local butcher; two days later he calls and says it's ready. Ready? it takes over a week to make hams, how is it ready? Oh, he sold my farm raised pig, was giving me pre packaged frozen stuff he get's in boxes and couldn't understand why we were mad.

Coincidentally immediately after that we purchased the tools we needed to butcher our meat ourselves.

How is it even possible to simply misplace a moose?

The situation is actually funny because its so freaking stupid.

Go the DIY route next year, these guys are something else.
