As reported in the Western Sportsman this month, MEC recognizes that you may NEED to harvest an animal in a life or death situation, but supports foundations partially responsible for the closure of the grizz season in AB. MEC opposes hunting in any other form, for subsistance or trophy.

I'll post more later from the article, but they have lost me forever.

I KNEW IT.
I applied for a job there once, and with a fantastic cover letter and great resume.
part of my cover letter referenced the fact that I had a lot of hunting experience, and could use that experience for outdoors equipment knowledge blah blah blah

they didnt call me back AT ALL.

#######s.

ummm... so far this sounds pretty vague....
"but supports foundations partially responsible for the closure of the grizz season in AB. MEC opposes hunting in any other form, for subsistance or trophy."
Can you name what foundations those are?
Or where MEC has any policy opposing hunting?
<disclosure: my wife works at MEC. I have gone shooting with several others that work there.>
I recognise that there are definitely some employees who work there who may not like hunting, but I have not heard or seen anything of this "policy"
(But I will admit it if I am wrong... I haven't read all their policy docs)

People are surprised by this? The company is basically run by hippies. Hippies don't like guns.. that's pretty much common knowledge isn't it?

The sierra cliub for one, on my last trip there there was a 5cent donation if you did not take a bag.
If I heard this I would've asked for them to double bag it ;)

Sucha shame to see a store that was in a warehouse with plywood and 2x4 shelves, run by realist outdoors men (not antis) and see i turn into a bastion of "i knwo whats best for everyone else"

Me too, I buy what I have to from there nothing else, I leave total boycots for reasons that matter. Their opinion is there own and they have every right right to have that miss-guided opinion.

Personally anti-hunting is best combated in 2 ways: take new people hunting and stop doing/tollerating stupid things

eg tresspassing to shoot gophers (a coworker has been talking about these extra special bone heads (story is too long to get into) all summer. That single bone headed act has caused probably hours of anti hunting conversation, and think of how often something like that happens.

Is this MEC (MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP) or MEC (MAYVILLE ENGINEERING COMPANY) the shotshell reloading people. Lets be clear. If it is MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP how does this surprise anyone, they have supported SIERRA CLUB and GREENPEACE in the past. Most are city TREE HUGGERS who haven't realized or over look the fact that their ads in the papers and their sales receipts cause a tree to die. But loggers are bad people killing the woods , which few of them also realize , that if you don't build a house or a MEC store on the land , tree's grow back again.

shazam, despite some individual employees attitudes the co-op is anti hunting (and possibly fishing) at the board level
there are so many reasons not shop at the co-op since they went "big box"
i have been a member since the mid 80s and haven't bought anything there since early 90s due to their various policies

when asked if i could drop my membership they were "no one has ever asked before, why would you want to..?"
when i gave them the list the were quite offended

thnaks Bearman I was wondering myself what MEC stood for. Anyways since I discovered Cabela's I gave up on them a long time ago.

Mountain Equipment Co Op is way out on the left of the political spectrum.

It's the haven of patchoulli smelling, dreadlocked, Birkenstock wearing, soap rejecting, pot smoking, tree planting, granola munchers.

That they are anti hunting, anti gun and anti everything I stand for is pretty much a given.

I haven't spent a penny there since they supported Bear Watchs' David Barbarash when they horassed/terrorized legal Black Bear hunters on Northern Vancouver Island in the 90's.

Put on some camo and go walk around one of their stores and notice the looks you get. Ask one of the honey's working there (the one with the hemp clothing) if that tent would be good for your next bambi hunt.

WOW..... i'm just freekin amazed such a large group of people dident know this a very long time ago.... being a member of the 4WD community this and many many other thing's are common knowledge....

something you may ALL want to look into is this http://www.rmri.org/
it's not just a colorado thing.... the long term plan is for a "privatly funded corridor of non-use area" stretching from colorado to banff!!!!!

laugh all you want..... some very wealthy people/businesse's pay lot's and lot's of money to buy/lease range land and whatever they can get there hand's on in the name of conservation.... and promptly put up "no hunting" "no tresspassing" and "no hiking/camping" sign's..... this effect's EVERYONE.... includeing the farmer's who are losing there crown land lease's to numberd company's....
