How often do I have to change the media in my tumbler? I've tumbled over 1500 rounds of dirty dirty 9mm in the last couple months and the media is getting way darker than when I started....is there a set round count that you can tumble with media before it becomes ineffective?

Walnut media can carry 24 times it's weight in grit and garbage.

Cool, I'll check that out. Right now I'm using Lyman Turbo Tumbler media (Corncob Green), works great, and I just pulled out another batch of 150 rounds of 99 and they're still shiny, so I'll just keep using whats in there I guess!

Here are a couple of tips to make your tumbler media last longer and work better.

Take a used dryer sheet (the kind you put in the clothes dryer) and cut it in to four pieces, add to your tumbler. Much of the dirt/dust will stick to/embed itself in the dryer sheet. Throw out the dirty dryer sheet and use a new one with every load of brass you run. You will be surprised at how much longer the media will last. To a cerain degree the dryer sheets will even "clean up" median that has become overly dirty.

Another thing that helps your tumblers media is to add a small amount of solvent to the media - I use Varasol. I probably add 1/4 ounce to my tumbler each time I use it. Just sprinkle it around in the media to distribute it. This not only helps the media do a better job of cleaning it also cuts down on the amount of dust produced (it seems to help the dryer sheets trap dust and dirt).

Evry now and then I add a small amount of Lyman Media polish to the tumbler. This stuff makes really makes the brass shine.

As for how long your media will last there are many variables involved, so no, there is really no set "lifespan" for it. I personally don't put sandy or muddy brass into my tumbler, I wash it first with plain old dishsoap and water. That removes the bulk of the gritt & crud. Many people would not want to go thru that exta step, but for me it's worth it since I'm not generally in any hurry.
