Media Separator - Recommendation?

I am looking to buy a media separator. Does anyone have a recommendation?

I can get the Lyman or the Frankford Arsenal, or spend a good deal more money for the smaller sized dillon one. The money isn't the issue; what is is whether or not it is worth it. If the dillon is that much better and will never break, then its worth it. If I am paying all that extra money for the name, I'd rather not.

In any case, I am looking for a recommendation or two!

The Dillon is a heck of a lot stronger, but whether or not that is needed is debatable. I have the Dillon because it was the only one available at the time...

The downside to the Dillon is that it takes up a lot more space and is messier to use if you're using it with SS media and water because you can't put it in the sink.
 
Thanks. I am not using SS media at this point - it might be a long time before I decide to invest for the super shiney brass!

I do like to buy once and cry once... but if the cheaper ones are just as good...
 
Yeah I have been doing it by hand and I am starting to go bananas. A few hundred case cases a week is taking its toll heh!
 
I just use a sifting cat litter pan (had one kicking around). Does a great job, but a bit more involved than turning a handle. Probably a bit messier as well, as some media will get on the floor if you're not careful.
 
I have had the small Dillon separator for years and just recently got the large because I went to the large Dillon tumbler. They do have a large footprint but they are very sturdy, work VERY well, and don't make a mess of things. I recommend against any of the "5 gallon bucket" style separators as they tend to fling media around the room. You want something with a tub under it.

If you have any thoughts of one day getting a larger tumbler then it might make sense to buy a larger separator up front so that you only have to buy one. The difference between the two is only $26 in sticker price in the case of the Dillon ones.
 
X3 on the RCBS one. Covers right up so there is no dust in the air. I also use it for stainless media but the base is pretty heavy when full of water, but not too bad.
 
I have the Frankford Arsenal. $50 at Bass Pro I think. A lid would be nicer to keep the dust and media in the bucket.

I'm using the RCBS for my SS tumbling. If you use the big pail separators, you have to fill the pail with water until the rotating basket is partially submerged. You have to do the same with the RCBS but it is much smaller requiring much less water. I actually use the "lid" side to do mine. Least amount of water required.
