medical certificate request from CFO

If you have ever lost your drivers licence or had it suspended beacuse passed out/fainted and the doctor diagnosed it as stroke or other mandatorily reportable ailment to the ministry could possibly have triggered their wanting a report?

no, nothing like that.

So I got the form, and other than a release asking for permission to talk with my doctor, They ask the DR to fill out a form declaring weather or not I have a history of violence towards myself or others, If im psycologicaly stable enough to posses firearms, ect.....

Me and the Doc sat down and contacted the cfo in Quebec together, and I expressed my concern for giving them full access to talk to the doctor. They wanted the waiver signed so that the doctor could communicate with them through that form, and assured me that he(the doc) would only be contacted should there be anything on the form to cause concern........or so they say.

Yes, I would like my pal as soon as possible, but Im going to be patient with this one, and carefull. Everything is signed, but the doc asked to NOT be contacted directly, and would prefere all communication to go through me. Doctor signed off that everything is OK with me, and hes not worried about me possing firearms.

CFO recieved the papers today( sent with tracking info ). I will call in 1 weks time to find out more if its not already approved by then. Who knows, they may send anathor request for more info.

I find that a good interpretation of doctor patient confidentiality. You asked your doctor to communicate to the CFO, and the doc said he would only through you and not directly.

Unlike the Ontario CFO meeting a little while back where the (evil) doctors may have said to the CFO that handing over patient names etc was fine with them. "The OMA was consulted and signed off their endorsement that this was both doable and ethical; from the Dr.'s perspective." (here)

There's still the issue of the CFO asking the doctors in the first place, which I am opposed.
(as opposed to medical information being sent by a Judge, as part of a court order, of which I am in favour, even if licencing/91/92 are abolished. If a Judge stands up and says a fellow is too waco to own firearms then police please go get em, go get the dude while your at it)

what if you DON'T HAVE a doctor, like a sh*tload of people in Quebec?

just a thought : maybe one of your references raised concern or answered weirdly to a question they asked??

I know this is old, going through my posts I realized I never got back to this. but wanted to complete the thread.

I had a bit of a criminal record from the past, nothing recent at all in this case. And I hade previously taken antidepressants for panic attacks. Those were the flags that got this started. the certificate was to assure that I was NOT unstable, not prone to violence, not severely depressed, never had a history of self injury or suicidal thoughts, and finally there were questions for the doctor to answer about his opinion on my potential for becoming a threat to myself or anyone else.

doctor filled it out clearing me, sent it in, and my application was approved! Just caused long delays in my application, that's all.

Cheers!

Waaaaay back when I got my first ATT, they had a form that I had to get filled out and one of the pages was to be filled out and signed off by a doctor, pretty standard stuff, basically asking them how long they had known/treated me and if they had any concerns about me getting an ATT.

I remember my doctor laughing and saying that it was a bit silly, since they hadn't asked if there was any problem with me owning handguns in the first place, but now they were asking if it was ok for me to get a piece of paper allowing me to legally take them to a gun range. "Because if you were a dangerous psychotic then you would just leave your pistol in your safe at home and not go out and shoot anyone if you didn't have a piece of paper allowing you to take it to the gun range, right?"

My guess is someone with a similar name had a psych admittance or an interaction with the police. I would have pushed the CFO, and said I have no documented mental health history. I suspect your information is related to another subject. What further information can I provide to confirm MY identification.

It also may have been something as a couple of open container tickets, or something to suggest drug or alcohol dependency.

i love it when people only read the first post or first 2 or 3 posts then feel the need to comment without reading what went down....seems the norm here lol just ranting...

still has not yet arrived. spoke yesterday again with the CFO, and with the CFC.
It is a medical certificate they are sending me and they want it filled out. That's all the info they gave me, As well as an authorization to communicate with my doctor.

as far as medical problems, I have been in the hospital a few times, normal stuff. broken bones and what not.

I would recommend refusing to sign and contact the shooting orgs ASAP. More CFO BS ....making up rules.

sounds to me like they want to know your psychological state. And they most likely want that authorization so they can bypass doctor-patient privacy. I figure so they can do it without you there and ask their loaded questions.

I'm just speculating however. But something similar has happened in the USA.

Doctor patient confidentiality is not iron clad in this country.
For example your doctor MUST inform drivers licensing authorities if you have any condition that could affect your ability to drive a motor vehicle safely.
We give doctors as little of our personal information as possible.
One doctor I went to in Toronto for a while had a "routine" questionnaire he wanted me to fill out and return.
One of the questions on the document asked whether I had firearms in my home.
I consulted with paw and then brought the questionnaire back to the doctor on the next visit blank and told the doctor that if he insisted on the completed questionnaire that I would go for medical services elsewhere.
I was accepted as a patient without submitting the intrusive and offensive (in my opinion) document.

I knew all along this OP had a criminal record of some sort,

I love all these why am I being denied im a good guy posts?!

and they always leave out that one tid bit of info

all you ops that make posts like these know exactly why you are being questioned and ran through the ringer so why start a thread and ask like your a victim of some sort?

Yeah... I mean I don't think having a minor criminal record / minor mental health issues from a decade ago should prevent you from getting a RPAL... but at the same time the op KNEW why he was being put through the ringer and questioned. So I agree, what was the point of the thread at all, why pretend you don't know why they are questioning you? I don't see the point.

GLAD your doctor worked with you! NO WAY would I sign a release letting the CFO contact my doctor directly to get info, that request is simply OUT OF LINE!

I don't have a problem with your application being flagged & then your doctor being required to clear you. That's crossing t's & dotting i's... But I really take issue with the CFO wanting you to sign that release for them to speak directly to your doctor! WOW!

application was approved today. Guess they wanted to make sure a professional thought I wasent wako.

Good to hear! Congrats!

Cheers

I just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced having to go through the medical certificate so I had an idea of what to expect as far as my application went.
At the time I simply didn't want to publicly post my history, it was somewhat irrelevant. I wasent trying to figure out why I was being requested the certificate, but rather what has happened to others that were asked the same.

I am an ER nurse, have you ever shown up in an ER after accidentally over consuming too many beverages/other? Many people do not know this but

you may have had the ministry notified by a doctor (they make more $ for doing this) or Formed deemed risk for self. this is a permenant mark on someones record that never goes away and has nothing to do with a persons regular state just that doctors opinion at the time which they are financially incentivized to complete.

Additional conditions that are report-able are seizure, stroke, narcolepsy, brain injury, chronic alcohol/drug, etc... not sure if all of these have to be cleared to own a firearm just know that anything regarding lack of competence of alcohol/drug is a permenant mark on someones record never requiring proof in court.
