Meet my brother's impossible demands

If he likes cool military looking type guns , then he can buy whatever he wants & shoot every weekend or day for that matter, to get his hard on.

but if he also want's to go hunting with a gun, those few times of the year that it's legal, then he has to buy a real hunting gun, semi or not.

so, he needs atleast 2 guns !

If he's not a experienced gun handler, I'd avoid a semi-auto. Too much opportunity to have one in the chamber, without handling the rifle accordingly...

strict requirements that it be:
-semi-automatic
-cheap to shoot
-can be used for hunting

Does he also want a full size Truck for hunting. Must drive itself, cheap as a civic on gas and never needs repairs.
Tell him to join the real world

Well guys, there surely is a rifle that hits his parameters, and it is called a Winchester Model 100, in .308 Win. Pleasant to shoot, pleasant to carry, reasonably accurate (easily minute of deer at 100 yards), cheap to feed, and fairly inexpensive to buy, around $450 to $550 at most gun shows. With enough energy for "bear defence" and perfectly adequate for moose, as long as he limits the range of his shots to something reasonable. A fun plinker and perfectly functional hunting rifle.

Doug

PS) Did I mention I know where there is one that can be bought? ;-)

There are plenty of fine military auto rifles which would be suitable for hunting. The FN-49 can be found in a number of calibers including .30-06 and 7X57. The Garand is an excellent rifle when a good example is found, and the M-305/M-14 is the darling of the shooting community these days. The Swedish Ljungman is also a robust semi auto rifle and can be found in 6.5X55. Sounds like your brother might be of the spray and pray school of marksmanship, but serious calibers like the .308 and .30-06 are far superior to the sub-rifle cartridges like the 7.62X39. Maybe the increased ammunition cost would encourage him to learn how to shoot.

buy an SKS for the range and a stevens 200 in 30-06 for hunting. total price with a decent scope is like $600.

That is what I was going to suggest, too.

or a Norinco M-14...

Best yet, get a Klingon Forehead Remmy!:p

I have to agree with Doug. The Win 100 is a great gun and it meets almost all of the criteria. It is also lighter than a garrand or M305 when carrying it hunting. 308 ammo can be obtained surplus but 7.62x39 is still far cheaper to shoot.

Let him get a semi auto 22 for practice!! There is no substitute for trigger time, and that means shooting from all positions, not just resting on a bench.

Your brother does realize that "You may not use a rifle of greater calibre than .275" in Southern Ontario to hunt small game (which includes varmints).

That, therefore, excludes the SKS or anything else that shoots 7.62 x 39 and certainly virtually every other calibre mentioned in this thread. :p

However one cartridge comes to mind that has been mentioned (Boomer is da man!). The 6.5 x 55 Swede. If it must be a semi :)rolleyes:) the ag42b Ljungman is the ticket. A relatively accurate rifle and certainly capable of taking large game while still remaining legal for small game! ;)
