Meet the Deadly AR-500 Rifle: An AR-15 On Steroids?

On display at last years SHOT show.
And from another vendor, Phoenix Weaponry, was the 45-70 Auto
That cartridge is a 45-70 Govt round with the rim lathed off, so it will fit in an AR-10 mag.

...77 grains is .6oz, but 400 grains is .91oz? Lol wut?

The .458 SOCOM basically is a .45-70. Aaaand for that reason, I really wanna build a .458 SOCOM upper for my SLR :D

458socom is like old 45-70, but it doesn't come all that close to what you can load 45-70 up to in a modern lever gun... Now, 45 raptor in an AR10 would be sweeeeet...

That's why I mentioned factory :)

I'm no expert on the .45-70, but I assume it is still loaded well below its potential due to the age of the cartridge, and the number of much older firearms in circulation that would kaboom if fed a much hotter .45-70 round?

It really depends. You can get full power loads from companies like Buffalo bore and Garrett, but most stuff from the likes of Remington ect are weak enough to be safe in trap door Springfield rifles. Trap door loads are 405gr bullet at 1300-1400fps, Buffalo bore loads the same weight bullet to 2000fps (for 3500+ft lbs energy).

In something really strong like a Ruger #1 you can go even higher.

Some reloading manuals have two sets of data for the 45-70, one for old guns, and a separate higher pressure section for modern guns.

MilArm at one point had a #1 Tropical in .458 Win Mag, i really wanted to grab... would have loved to see what you could do to that thing, maybe even ream it for .458 lott :p

I'd love to see what wilcat stuff you could do with that puppy.

Just like 7mm Mauser.

I had a #1 in .450 Nitro Express 3 1/4". The case capacity of the round is somewhere more than a .458 Lott but less than a 460 Wby, but the traditional loads are meant for a double rifle (480 grain to about 2100 fps.)

In the #1 I got a 500 grain TSX to 2450 fps for 6670 ft. lbf of energy. This was in a rifle that was less than 9 lbs too. It was a handful.

Considering that they started with an AR-10 platform; This rifle caliber does seem really underpowered.

They really should have been going for a "Nitro Express" type of round to just barely fit in the gun.
