...77 grains is .6oz, but 400 grains is .91oz? Lol wut?
The .458 SOCOM basically is a .45-70. Aaaand for that reason, I really wanna build a .458 SOCOM upper for my SLR![]()
Good catch Scotty. 77gr. is 0.176 oz.

458socom is like old 45-70, but it doesn't come all that close to what you can load 45-70 up to in a modern lever gun... Now, 45 raptor in an AR10 would be sweeeeet...
That's why I mentioned factory
I'm no expert on the .45-70, but I assume it is still loaded well below its potential due to the age of the cartridge, and the number of much older firearms in circulation that would kaboom if fed a much hotter .45-70 round?
It really depends. You can get full power loads from companies like Buffalo bore and Garrett, but most stuff from the likes of Remington ect are weak enough to be safe in trap door Springfield rifles. Trap door loads are 405gr bullet at 1300-1400fps, Buffalo bore loads the same weight bullet to 2000fps (for 3500+ft lbs energy).
In something really strong like a Ruger #1 you can go even higher.

MilArm at one point had a #1 Tropical in .458 Win Mag, i really wanted to grab... would have loved to see what you could do to that thing, maybe even ream it for .458 lott
I'd love to see what wilcat stuff you could do with that puppy.
