Meeting place for Newbies and Mentors -Ontario

i have just gotten off of the phone with gueloh, peterborough and minden MNR offices. None could offer any helpo as to where i can discharge a firearm for purposes other than hunting, or WHEN.

somone please help - is this a futile search? must i either hunt or wait for club access?
try to get ahold of a Land Tenure map - this is a map which shows which land is private and which is Crown (public) - you can try the MNR of one of those areas or a few years back they had them at Elwood Epps north of Orillia - still need to check with local municipalities that you are not in a 'no discharge of firearms' zone (mostly inside town limits and often posted on the town's website) - by the way, even in areas with no Sunday hunting, targeting is OK

I know that Silverdale allows for non-member to go there. Will they issue the short time ATT for you?
I am not sure if you are a member of any other club - generally the club will apply for the ATT for you, and if you have one of those you can then use it at other clubs in Ontario - you must take a reasonably direct route to whichever club you wish to shoot at (not vary off somewhere to visit your aunt on the way) and if you do not own a restricted firearm you will not likely get either a STATT or an ATT - however, some handgun ranges do allow long guns - if they fire ammunition commonly found in handguns (due to the pounding of the backstops of higher powered loads)

West end of Ottawa here, just completed my PAL and RPAL.

I'm interested in finding a range to shoot WWI and WW2 era Rifles and pistols.

Recommendations?

TIA.

Eastern Ontario Handgun Club. Check the EOHC website. Coincidence, if you're into mil surplus stuff they are having their Winter Milsurp Shoot on (I think) the 21st of Jan. Check website for details.

It looks like a nice facility but it's also about 45 mins from my house, which isn't great.

How do the facilities at Stittsville compare (it's about 30 minutes away, and also on the way to my cottage which is convenient)? Do they have a website? I can't seem to find anything.

I've been a member of EOHC since early 2000's,

It's Quiet And there is almost always a range available to shoot on by myself on weekdays, 35 - 40 minutes drive from home.

It's all outside if you don't mind the open air, (Sometimes cold air)

Check their site for more details.

I've got one of their hand-outs at home that has membership pricing, club hours of operation, etc., that I can post up later, if you like.

On that same note, I've been thinking about checking out the EOHC - but as Capt Canuck says, it is 45 minutes from where I live. Though Stittsville is 30, so not really much of a big difference.

Thanks, that would be great if you could post up a scan of the handout.

I actually don't have a scanner (yes yes, I know I know), so I'll just type it up.

There you have it. :)

Awesome, thanks for doing that Pretzel.

I think what I'll do come the spring is spend a half-day at each facility and then go from there.

As the prior poster mentioned, it isn't cheap and the weekday availability is less than idea, particularly in the summer months when I might want to go out for a morning shoot. That extra 15 mins there and back to the EOHC may indeed be worth it in the final analysis.

Keep in mind, though, that guests can shoot at the Stittsville range for $25. So you can drop in on the weekend no problem. Keep in mind, that in order to make use of the membership you'd have to shoot over 14 times in a given year.

I think last year I went maybe... 5 or 6 times? No where near the cost of a membership, anyway. And even if I was a member, I don't have time to get out on weekdays anyhow.

Yep, good point. I'll definitely have to do that math once I see what both locations have to offer.

One question I have though relates to the bringing restricted weapons (handguns) to the range. Is it possible to get an ATT (authorization to transport) the restricted weapon to and from the range if one is not a member? i.e. if I just used Stittsville on a pay per use basis?

you need to be a member to get an att, proof or reason for you transporting a restricted gun in public
