OP, all of these suggestions are fine.
Some folks can read a book or manual and be fine. Some need eyes on and hands on experience, guided by an in your face mentor.
If you happen to be in the latter category, there is no better place to find a mentor than to join a club with a Muzzle Loading/Black Powder segment.
In your immediate area, I'm willing to bet there is at least one club, within driving range, that is a dedicated BP shooters club.
Do an internet search, other than here on CGN.
Many BP shooters tend to be individualistic loners as well as being CHEAP

They don't mingle well with others
Then, there are those that join clubs and attend matches dedicated to their choice of firearms.
You'll find that both types are usually quite personable and very willing to pass on their personal knowledge and experience.
I know more than a couple of people that bought BP firearms with the idea they would like to get into the nostalgic version of shooting. They put the firearms, with some or all of the components needed to shoot them into the safe and on shelves and they sit there.
I'm seeing more and more unfired since purchased new BP firearms at gunshows, some fo them decades old.
Usually at very decent prices, well below what the recently made clones sell for.
Getting into BP should be looked at very closely before jumping in.
One thing to get straight right from the beginning is that a BP firearm, even with modern Pyrodex (non corrosive) powders, need to be cleaned ASAP before putting them back in the safe.
Be careful not to purchase an odd ball caliber if you don't cast your own bullets/balls.
You will also have to pick up the proper accessories, if your firearm doesn't com with them.
Ball/bullet starters
Proper thickness linen patches
Black Powder of the appropriate grade for your firearm
Patch lubricant
Projectiles of proper diameter, although, just about any diameter ball can work quite well with enough patches and even undersized maxy balls can be patched with good success.
There are pellets of black powder available as well as jacketed bullets, inserted into plastic cups etc.
And that's just the start.
