Mentoring

all ya gota do is ask some one kindly if they will take u out. most people usually will have no problem with showing u the ropes.

good luck man !

Good idea.

I'd also suggest that we encourage seasoned hunters to try other disciplines. I for one, have no idea how to hunt ducks with a dog, and now that I have a young lab that loves to hunt - I'd like to give that a try.

How to proceed? Stickied thread?

sounds like a great idea!

I'm new to hunting and BC, anyone I know who hunts is back in ontario. If anyone is going after deer this fall in the sea to sky area and wouldn't mind a tag along newb with an appetite for learning please let me know!

Yes, can this be stickied? I am not just speaking for myself, but for anyone that would love to go out hunting, but would appreciate help from the more experienced hunter. Unfortunately, many of us grew up in a non hunting enviroment :(

Hunting is dwindling across the country, and I see this as a great way to keep it alive with new hunters.

I will sticky this. I would add that there are a number of mentor programs already in Alberta. I am a hunting mentor currently with the hunting for tomorrow program here in Alberta. We run a number of new hunting mentor hunts covering all aspects and types of hunting. It is intended to offer new hunters the chance to learn the ropes. AHEIA also offers a number of clinics...but they vary from year to year. I spend alot of time mentoring youth bowhunters but there are lots of rifle opportunities. Alberta is hugely pro hunter in terms of governement relations with hunters and stake holders. One of the reasons I will not be leaving the province anytime soon!

444shooter - please give me a shout and we can get you linked up with someone from the program. I am just about to head out to Caroline to teach a bowhunter safety course but should have internet access daily.

Cheers

Jeff

Saskatchewan

There is an open invitation to anyone in Saskatchewan that would like go hunting or shooting.

I'm an avid hunter of waterfowl, deer, elk, moose and bear,...but must confess, my heart has a special place for waterfowl,..

If you're new or as seasoned as my old cast iron pan, ... don't be shy.
I have some wondeful areas.

I am not a reloader, and not an avid range shooter, and do not own handguns,...(in case that's what you were looking for)

Likewise, if you do handguns etc, perhaps you could teach me a thing or two;)

Safety foremost,..

If you can understand me talking, we'll do alright!!:D

This is a great idea i think, a real good way to keep hunting alive by helping newcomers.
My father and I are new to hunting and are having a hard time getting anywhere i.e. finding places and we don't really know much technique for any type of hunting. Especially here in Ontario and where we are near Toronto there are not many places to hunt and people are not nearly as openminded towards the sport as other places.
If veterans out there are willing to let a couple of us newbies tag along that would be great.

On the other hand we are avid range shooters and own handguns also, so anyone near the GTA is welcome to PM me for a day up to the range shooting handgun, trap or rifle.

A friend offered me free use of her summer place in a well populated deer area.

I got a deer there last year and now her 18 year old son wants to come with me. I'm taking him on an alpine Mulie trip for August 1.

Many thanks for the sticky. I hope everyone across Canada can help new hunters in some way. We need to keep this around for our children and their kids to enjoy.

If anyone hunts elk down in 300A (around the Waterton area) I could use some guidance for a cow that my Dad was drawn for this year (Sept.9th season opens IIRC). I'm only a deer hunter and not in that WMU at all. My Dad is asking around now trying to find someone that knows the area and where to get a cow, but if I can find someone on here I think it would be better.
Just PM me please.

I was, ( at 18 I had lost my Dad) by ( not mine ) two brothers and a brother-in-law into
waterfowling, upland hunting & deer hunting. All 3 have now passed, but I remember well many of the things they introduced me to and taught me.

Eternally greatful to 3 fine Sportsmen !

I certainly introduced my (now adult) son & daughter
into the outdoors and taught them to shoot & fish, and
it's now a pleasure to have a couple of young fellows in
camp bringing their sons along the same path.

I have been hunting with my father since i was young but far from edmonton where I now reside and i have got my gf interested in hunting as well but driving 5 hors for a hunt isnt very easy every weekend and hunting season is short. Id love to find someone willing to take us out and show us a nice deer, elk, moose, bird or whatever hunting area near edmonton and show us around a bit. If anyone is interested and in the area, please feel free to give me a shout. We will be out at the genesese range every weekend until then so if anyone wants to come for a range day give me a shout as well.

This is a fine idea... fine indeed.

The first person who took me hunting was a fellow who responded to a post I made on Alberta Outdoorsmen Forum.

Newbie looking... can offer to teach what little we have as well.

I had to jump into the deap end on my own last year, though there were offers made by several cgn'ers and hunting bc'ers - just didn't work out for location or time.

I've now got another newbie hunting partner, but if anyone really really needs a little help (don't know how helpful we can be) we're in the victoria area.

P.S. maybe have a hunters offering and newbies looking thing... even just put Hunter offering or newbie looking in the subject title?

there's something here in alberta for new hunters... it's called hunter for tomorrow foundation, and they have a mentoring program for first time hunters...
i think this is awesome, and hope they have similar programs all across the country
