hey all,
I was thinkin of adding one of the large size mercury recoil reducing tubes to the buttstock of an m14. Anyone had much experience using these? The .308 is pretty tame as far as recoil goes but i'm looking for anything to make her less jumpy on rapid fire without going to a muzzle break.
your thoughts?

I have yet to use one, I have installed one and then sold the rifle. I will be installing on in my 7mm-08. Like you I don't find the recoil to be bad but I am trying to make a 7mm that shoots like a 22-250!

As well, I would like to make my 22-250 shoot like a .22lr!

We used to make these up ourselves, when it was still easy to get surplus mercury from magnahelics and the like. Now everything has to be accounted for.

We found it was not advisable to use plastic tubes in wooden stocks.

After many shots, the stocks would sometimes split. The plastic container, of neccessity, needed to fit tightly in the stock to be effective or have some sort of device installed to stop it from haveing any rearward or frontward movement, as that would negate any of the benefits, as well as being noisey.

After a while, the plastic would expand from the pounding of the recoil and split the stock.

Now this didn't happen to all of the stocks (we didn't have plastic stocks) and a couple of them are still in use. But we did stick to aluminum conduit after that and sometimes the steel conduit.

I don't know what the new kits are made of. Just something to be careful of if you have a wooden stock.

Most use stainless steel cases and have threaed plugs that are well sealed.
I would hesitate in installing 1 in an M14 type rifle, it may mess with the cycling. Not sure on that but something to consider.
To be effective and not damage the stock they should be epoxied in place, which makes them hard to remove.
Personally I would get a Smith Coast Guard brake. They work VERY well and do not make the gun noisier that they already are.

Another poor mans recoil reducer, is to take a 3" x 5/8" ,O.D. and fill it with molten lead.It does add a bit of weight, but it definately reduces felt recoil.

I have one in my Tikka M695 Stainless in .338WM.
The extra weight in the butt stock helped.
A version is also available for the forestock as well.
Try the Brownells catalogue.
