MERGED. Type 81 is on its way to Canada. Classed as RESTRICTED

Hmmm... another 1/2" and a bit in barrel length to be non-restricted.....???

Yes. The carbine has a 17.4 inch barrel in its original dimensions. The LMG style has a barrel length of around 20 inches.

The carbine would need a longer barrel, which some Chinese arsenal's apparently are already doing for export. The LMG is good to go in that style as NR given it's barrel length.

As far as i can see in the FRT searching for make: norinco and model: %81% everything is still apearing as prohibited. Maybe they havent made a new frt for it as non restricted.

It is restricted. Bfiles posted the FRT number. 160486

It is a restricted FRT entry as the barrel length on the sample is shorter than 18.6 inches. Bring in a version with a barrel over 18.6 inches and presto, NR. No lab inspection needed.

- "T81SA" was marked on the left side of an observed example.

- this is a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle, based on the design by Wang Zi Jun and manufactured by the Chinese factory system as a semi-automatic, export version of their issue Type 81 Assault Rifles and Machine Guns.

- features include: dark phosphate finish on metal parts; lacquered or painted wooden forearm, handguard, and buttstock; concentric rings on the muzzle to allow the launching of rifle grenades; a front sight base built into the gas take-off port, with a gas regulator that can be adjusted (with the head of a cartridge case) between "light"(1), "heavy"(2), and "grenade" (0) settings; a separate gas piston/bolt carrier assembly; a stamped and folded sheet-metal receiver/frame with a wide top portion and narrow lower portion; a rotating safety on the left side of the receiver/frame, accessible with the thumb; a bolt hold-open which locks the bolt to the rear when the magazine is empty (which requires magazines with a special follower to activate the bolt hold-open device.); and a "slot" style of rear sight, which is adjustable by rotating range dials on the sides of the sight block.

- the Poly Technologies export version of the TYPE 81SA firearm is a purpose built semi-automatic firearm.

- the Poly Technologies export version of the TYPE 81 SA firearm is included in the family of Chinese Service Rifles (TYPE 63, TYPE 63/68, TYPE 68, TYPE 81 & TYPE 81 SA) and is not a variant or modified version of the AK-47.
