Merits of 7mm Rem Mag Vs 338 Win Mag for long range Elk/Moose/Bear cartridge?

So just for the fun of it I was playing around with the ballistics calculators on the Hornady site for the 338 230GR ELDX vs another favourite of mine, the 375H&H 300gr and it really illustrates how much more energy the 338's are carrying down range.

Did we settle on what the sweet spot for 7RM was? 140-160gr range for a 1-9 twist?

The Original A-Bolt I had really liked 150gr Nos BTs over IMR 4350.

And.. is the 280AI that much of a comparable alternative to the 7RM?

The 280 AI is a great round, but a 7MM Remington Magnum it isn’t.

160 gr well constructed bullets will set you up well for any NA game in a 7 Mag, of whatever flavor. - dan

Thats a beast of a bullet! That one, at that speed is really starting to get to numbers where I'd admit to see more smack when it hits, will admit that lol

yes , in some aspects it's a better cartridge
do your own research ,
as this post will be challenged , biased

Slower with same weight bullets. Factory ammo is even more expensive than factory 7 RM. Only advantage I can think of is you can usually get one more round in a standard rifle. Of course your post will be challenged, it isn't true. And I'm a fan of the 280 AI. - dan

I’m a fan as well. But you are correct. It just isn’t true.

The 180gr ELD-M with a near .800 BC and Hornady showing 2900 fps from a 7mm RM and RL-26 must be pretty out of this world too.

Guess I’m old school, and old. Been using the .338 for decades, always works great period. Made one long shot over 400 with it but almost all the rest have been under 300 with the majority under 200. Hunted with a couple of STWs for a few years, extremely flat and very sure killers as well. Shot the 160 Noslers at very close to 3300. Like the old guys said, it shoots flat for about a half mile then goes up a little. Haha No plans for over 500 yards here.

my Kimber with factory 160 partitions will match that posted velocity , well 2990 avg...
you right 5 down 1 up
less recoil . the 7rm is grossly underloaded in factory which most people shoot , I think
I realize the numbers shown are hand loaded
the 280 ack in my hunting is better , to carry and shoot
I have 2 diff 7rm , Sauer and Tikka

Crazy. The velocity is what was the highlight here, but that load shoots like that in about any condition imaginable. It’s a good load.

Yup, no doubt its a good load. I was maxed out with my rifle, I will down load a little, probably to 2900 fps or there about. My rifle is a kimber montana so its fairly light and that load was a little snappy. :)

I've owned a half dozen 7 mags, rem and wby. I've had two 280 AI's, and one 7mm Gibbs (even more case capacity than the AI). All else being equal, the mags were ALWAYS faster. - dan

I've seen differently than you .
Actually take any caliber and see if all rifles have the capability of shooting the same velocity , nope
Rifles in the same cartridge can vary 100 fps ,
