Hi,

I just recently bought a Merkel 47e from 1975 and I have a few questions. When cleaning the gun I noticed that the rear trigger has been replaced since it is different blueing and also the firing pins stick out front the breech when the gun is in decocked position and they can't be pushed back in. but the move back in when the gun is cocked. Is this normal? If not how complex are the internals on this gun and who would work on these in Canada? Also how hard to find?/How much are replacement stocks for this gun since the there is a crack forming along the top of the trigger guard.

Shane at Reliable in Vancouver might be able to help you and the fine folks in Cranbrook might be able to assist you too.
Cranbrook gun maker is a high end shop and do lots of hands on custom builds they also have Merkles in the used/consignment section from time to time as well, hence my reference of them.
Have you heard of shotgunworld.com? There could be some useful information found there as well.

Hi Swiftie, I had a beretta that was doing that, some advice. I would not shoot it till its fixed . Sounds like the firing pins need to be adjusted or shortened. By loading it when the action is open and then closing it with the pins sticking out it could fire with the breach partially open. Very dangerous. Are you in Ontario? If so I know 2 good gunsmiths that could fix that for you? Rob (sidexeach)

Firing pins should not be pushed out when the firearm is not cocked. this is unsafe and if you have a live round in the chamber and banged or dropped the firearm in just the right way it could discharge. So I would get this fixed before you use it again. I have people bring me firearms that have been worked on by the wrong person. Firing pin specification are exact as far a Positive and complete protrusion. Before you have someone work on your firearm make sure they are a gunsmith not a store who just got a gunsmith permit added to their license. Now you have to explain to the CFO why you should have the license to operate as a gunsmith.

Which gun smith in cranbrook?, I've tried closing it with snap caps and the gun doesn't go off. I'm located in Manitoba so smiths in ontario aren't ideal

Are you talking about a hammer gun with non-rebounding strikers?
If its hammerless, does the gun #### on opening or on closing?

EDIT: Google tells me that the 74e is hammerless. In that case I must assume that the gun cocks on closing, rather than on opening, otherwise how could you tell the pins stick out when "de-cocked"? In which case the hammers should retract and take pressure off the pins before the gun is completely closed. I say "should" as I've never operated a Merkel.

As ninepointer said - don't get all excited as yet.

Of course talk to a good double gun smith.

With some double guns, until you put them together and open (to load) and then close, the pins may protrude.

If I understand you correctly, the pins are protruding when the gun is in the taken down status? or in the put together status but opened?
Or are they protruding as you close the gun on the primered caps?
