Merkel 96k Drilling valuation and Id

The more I study this rifle the more I believe its older than what ive initally tought. I know the previous owner and he is a walking encyclopedia so im simply surprise he was wrong about this one. But I too was thinking its was older on the first sight.

East German (GDR) Merkel made in December 1983 (1283).

For a 1983 manufacture date, the nitro proof mark ought to be

Well, the gun is marked "Made in GDR" the German Democratic Republic only existed from Oct 1949 to Oct 1990.

Merkel Freres Suhl is French and it is marked "Trio".

I'll stand by the December 1983 date as this is a gun made in East Germany for export for hard currency.

I own 4 drilling’s currently and aging them can be tough. I would agree that Dec 1983 would be the date of manufacture. 20 gauge shotguns were not common on older drilling’s as the 16g and 12 were much more common.

I use germanhuntingguns website and their links for information on drilling’s and proof marks. I recently purchased/traded for a 16x16 over 7x65R and trade value was $3000. My gun is in the same shape and has original scope in claw mounts as well. Your gun would likely command a premium on that based on the 9.3x74 caliber which is always desired.

I have a 12x12 over 7x57r up on EE right now….

Are you planning to use it or sell/trade yours? Lol

Enjoy, it’s a beautiful rifle!

I plan on trading/selling it soon, but first I need to properly appraise it. The only think im not sure at this point are the chokes. If cant Id it ill bring it to a gunsmith for measurment.

the price given at the beginning made cry or laugh ... when my father passed away 3 years ago we got hard time to get 2000 euros with a beautiful stock, scope on it and a better (universal mount) that was on it and it pas purchased in the 80s before the end of ddr ... it was a 16-16 with 7x65r and the zeiss was a 1.5-6x42 with german 4. good luck on your sale.

i would have taken it if french rules did not change for export.

I have that exact scope, mount and similar GERMAN scope. $3000 CDN was the trade value I got it at so basically what you sold yours for. They are such cool guns.

Is this a newer model/ higher grade than the 12/12/22 hp merkel that great north has? Looks like it’s in another league. Cool combo of calibers and great shape. I can’t speak to the price but I would ignore lowballers even if you have to sit on it, with guns like this the person who wants it will pay, you just have to find them

lowballer or realistic purchaser? 4500 is way too much ...

8lbs unload with the scope on. Its also a well balance gun.

- Looking at the Merkel specs for the current 96K, I was surprise to see a listed weight of 3.1kg (6.8lbs). I've had double that weighted as much.

Don't know about price, like I said before, I can't even remember the last time I saw someone at the range with a combination gun never mind a drilling...
- This been said, the Bühag Drilling in 16/16/7x57R is looking like a good deal.

This been said, if the Liberal succeed in imposing a limit to the number of firearm someone is allowed to own/possess... the price (and demand) of drilling will certainly go up.

we had that limit in europe and people got rid of the old stuffs to get new ones like rifles where you can change the barrel and keeping the same receiver. drilling has always been a specific tool that most will never use ...
