Getting into action shooting, I wanted to have appropriate footwear. My regular hikers were too heavy/restrictive, while normal running/skate shoes that I wear aren't all that great in the dirt. With my wide, weird-shaped flat feet that are sensitive to pain after a bunch of hours standing, I'm extra anal about that and generally work through a bunch of models until I find something that fits right.. Eventually, I got myself a pair of Merrel Moab's..
The good: They are low-tops, offer plenty of freedom of movement. They are reasonably light for the type of shoe. The aggressive tread works well both in the grass and in the dirt. I also love the fact that the manufacturer caters to those of us with wide feet.
The bad: A little overpriced for what you get, but not a terrible value either
The ugly: After a couple of hours on your feet they become real uncomfortable for us flat-footers. I even splurged on gel insoles that allowed me to wear normal workboots for 12-14hr shifts on hard surfaces without any issues, but even with them and in the dirt/grass, I start cursing my flat feet and those shoes. When I helped out with a BB clinic, I was in hell by lunchtime and just waiting to change into my skaters by the time we were done with the teardown. They were ok for short matches.
The verdict: If your feet are sensitive, take a pass. Otherwise, this is a very reasonable choice for shooting outdoor matches. I ordered a pair of Speedcross 3 GTX to see if they'll be easier on my feet after a few hours.
