Merrell Moab low-top hiker review

Getting into action shooting, I wanted to have appropriate footwear. My regular hikers were too heavy/restrictive, while normal running/skate shoes that I wear aren't all that great in the dirt. With my wide, weird-shaped flat feet that are sensitive to pain after a bunch of hours standing, I'm extra anal about that and generally work through a bunch of models until I find something that fits right.. Eventually, I got myself a pair of Merrel Moab's..

The good: They are low-tops, offer plenty of freedom of movement. They are reasonably light for the type of shoe. The aggressive tread works well both in the grass and in the dirt. I also love the fact that the manufacturer caters to those of us with wide feet.
The bad: A little overpriced for what you get, but not a terrible value either
The ugly: After a couple of hours on your feet they become real uncomfortable for us flat-footers. I even splurged on gel insoles that allowed me to wear normal workboots for 12-14hr shifts on hard surfaces without any issues, but even with them and in the dirt/grass, I start cursing my flat feet and those shoes. When I helped out with a BB clinic, I was in hell by lunchtime and just waiting to change into my skaters by the time we were done with the teardown. They were ok for short matches.

The verdict: If your feet are sensitive, take a pass. Otherwise, this is a very reasonable choice for shooting outdoor matches. I ordered a pair of Speedcross 3 GTX to see if they'll be easier on my feet after a few hours.

Interesting....I just left a review on MEC for the Merrell mid top hikers. I too have wide feet, but thankfully, not flat footed, and I love these shoes! Did a 6KM round trip hike into the Grand Canyon last week (among other mountain hikes), and while my knees and heart are still cursing me, I loved the shoes. Wearing them daily now.

Mine aren't absolutely flat but they are a bit flatter than they should be.. Now I have a wide range of footwear, from sandals, to skaters, to running shoes, to dress shoes (only worn at weddings and funerals), to court shoes, to workboots, to hiking boots, but these have been exceptionally uncomfortable after a bit of time on my feet even on soft ground.

Just a note.. I wore them at a match this Saturday. The one difference was placing an insulated insole underneath the gel insole that I was already using to minimize the pain. I don't know whether it was the extra insole or the extreme cold numbing my feet a bit, but the experience wasn't as agonizing as it was when I wore them in the summer/fall. Yeah, I breathed a sigh of relief when I took them off but there were no swearwords involved. I still think it's my feet and not the actual shoe design.

My recommendation: If they are comfortable in store, I'd still spend a couple of hours on my feet at home wearing them before taking them to a match. Had I done that, I would have returned them. This will be my new SOP for any new pair of shoes.

P.S. Just spent about 3hrs on hard floor wearing Salomon Speedcross 3 GTX shoes and no issues at all (also no sigh of relief taking them off lol)

Chalk it up to the manufacturer. Some just don't work on some feet. Years ago I tried Merrell and hated them. I tried mine on just to compare with a couple others, and they came home with me.

I also have flat feet and these hikers and agree with your review....hurts my feet after a while but not as bad as my old hikers

True.. It can vary even when the manufacturer's the same but with a different model. From now on, I'll definitely test for comfort at home before taking the shoes outside... 2-3hrs of standing to make sure they don't cause comfort issues. That was the only way I could have figured things out with the Merrrells because they were the most comfortable pair in the store at ANY price.
