Hi all,

New guy here on a 870 project. Any feedback on the above ? There are cheaper options on the market, just looking if if is worth the price tag...How is the rail ?

Thanks

Just remember if you break a shell holder your 250-300$ rail is now ugly or useless or both. Get it tapped for a rail buy a high end rail and use the Velcro side saddles like all the cool kids. Also handy for peel and stick and you have 6 or 8 rounds instantly again. Handy for at the range too for holding shells instead of just the shell box.

Good luck with your build!

How in the heck would you break a Mesa shell carrier? You would literally destroy the gun if you hit it hard enough to deform the shell holder!

I have one on my M4s90 and one on my Supernova. Great shell carriers, and they come with different "tubes" for retention (the white one for long term storage of shells, and the black one for short term but tighter hold).

The ONE thing you have to watch out for, is that the rail has a "channel" cut down the middle, so some optic mounts like the Larue Tactical mounts with just nubs in the middle as recoil lugs can deform enough to slide. Anything with a full width cross lug or bolt is good to go!

I've had all kinds of shell carriers. My favorite is the peel and stick velcro.

I can't stand those velcro things. Bought several and wasn't impressed. Actually, I've come to not like shells on the gun at all. Carries much better without them.

Each to their own ...

I went with the Mesa Tactical Polymer Sureshell side saddle for my 870 Tactical. Mine already had a rail so I didn't need it. It came with replacement elastomers, it looks well made and very sturdy as it is moulded to an aluminum backing plate which is against the receiver.

I have a Mesa 6 shell holder with the rail on my 870. It is snug and allows me to mount a rds on the rail section that holds zero fine. The shell holder gives me six rounds for slug change overs or emergency reloads. Very handy. They can't fall off like velcro ones. The rail sits highenough above the rceiver to allow the use of the bead sight by looking under the rail. I like that in the event my rds goes down. Overall the mount is study and durable. You won't be disappointed in this addition to your 870. I'd keep my eyes on the EE for a used one depending on how much they are new or how patient you are.

I had a Mesa 'Saddle Rail' on a 12 1/2 inch 870, one thing I found was that if your 870 has the standard laminated handguard/pump set up, you'll need to notch the wood to clear the shell carrier. Beyond that, there were no issues with the gun/sight/rail. It's amazing how accurate you can be with slugs, from a short barreled shotgun, using a red dot.

I have both the aluminium and polymer. I'm starting to like the polymer ones because of the weight savings.
