Hey guys,

Just wondering where I can pickup a cheap pistol (9mm) that I can mess around with. I dont care about quality or anything as it is just to play with.

Thanks

You do not "mess around" with a gun, thats how people get hurt or killed. if you want a gun to "mess around" with I suggest a cheap airsoft, or better get a water pistol.

Joined up CGN in June 2007 and this is the first post?

What's up with that?

And +1 on you don't "mess around" with guns..... ;)

NAA.

Go to the hospitals close to you and find one you like . Make a reservation.
Firearms are not toys to be "messed around" with by someone.

Down, boys! Down! Heel! :)

Call it a hunch, but I think he was speaking very metaphorically, in the same sense that a lot of us go out to the range to "play with our toys".

When I first read his post, I was thinking that it was to teardown and do some amateur gunsmithing with. (There I go assuming again) I was thinking of getting an old, worn out (rusted?) S&W K-frame for just that reason myself. Learn to take it apart and reassemble without worrying about breaking a $700 revolver. I was too chicken to pull apart my Model 29 or Model 19.

Just a thought.

well that was an interesting response!! Being someone who carries a pistol on an everyday basis at work does not make me someone who does not handle firearms safely. I am sorry if i offended anyone.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

Or plink. Or blast. Or pop a few.

But what the hell. GET THE NEWBIE!

Yep, the sharks really jumped to the bait on that one didn't they.....

There's cheap and then there's inexpensive. Unless you're willing to fiddle with the innards I'd suggest getting a decent brand and model that's used to save a few bucks rather than going for the cheapest thing that money can buy. Inexpensive or first rate you'll soon shoot far more than the cost of the gun in ammo and at that point if you've had to deal with a grip that doesn't fit your hand or a gun that jams up once ever mag or two or one that breaks and you can't get parts for then you'll be sorry you didn't opt for spending a little more for one with a known decent reputation and support.

On that front, although it pains me, if you find the Glock fits your mit well enough you won't go wrong in terms of shooting it and putting it away for months then bringing it out again and shooting it some more. Despite my feelings on them for someone that wants a casual gun you won't go wrong since even if something does happen to it parts are easily available in Canada from the shelf so there'd be minimal down time. Why it pains me to recomend them is that I just can't abide the looks of them or the blocky feel in my hand. But truth be known they shoot and group the shots just fine.

The only other gun that comes even close to the ubiquity of the Glock is some form of 1911. But those are only really widely available in .45ACP which gets pretty expensive to shoot.

Of course if you're just looking for a casual plinker and don't mind the soft recoil then a Ruger or Buck Mark .22 would not be a bad way to go. They really are nice guns and super cheap to shoot.

If he's able to purchase a gun legally then he's got an RPAL. That makes him okally-dokally in my books.

Although I technically appreciate that I've < switch to Monty Python accent > transcended the unwritten CGN lawr.... :D

Maybe it's because I'm not all that far from having jumped off the newbie wagon myself that I felt just a little bit of sympathy for his plight... :D

Oh rats, I didn't know someone was going to bring common sense and facts into this thread.

I'll put the torches away.

"...pickup a cheap pistol..." What's your budget? Doubt you'll beat the $199 for a Tokarev though.
"...too chicken to pull apart my Model 29 or Model 19..." Same basic innards. Smith revolvers need one specially bent and slotted tool to take out the rebound spring. $19.99US from Brownell's or you can make one on a lathe. Bit under 1/8" diameter, as I recall, with a wee slot. No hardening required.

Hey R-man, these guys are just having fun so I hope you aren't thin skinned.
Call it your initiation but this is a great forum with lots of knowledgeable members.

But going back to your question, try looking for a Norinco M213. They were around $130 including shipping and taxes a few months ago at Canadaammo.
Somebody may want to unload even at $150 I think they are good buy.
