i got some cloth belts but i'm wondering if anyone is carrying the metal links i know marstar ran out in 308 thats what i'm looking for thanx

PS how do they compare to the cloth

If you are going to use the Isreali links, then you would be restricted to 5 round belts. If you stretch out some 30-06 links, then you will be OK.

It is unlikely that anyone in Canada will be able to afford or even find enough rounds to wear out a trunnion.

I have heard this opinion before. Perhaps my 1919a4 is defective. I have three deep grooves on it from running links. Were some not hard-chromed to resist such wear?

What kind of metallic links were you runing? If it was the 30-06 with 7.62 in them, could the extra case diameter have been causing them to drag a bit more than usual? Or could the trunnion's hardening have been incorrect? I can't imagine the US or Isrealis having a gun that would wear the trunnion out in only a few (tens of) thousand rounds.

Ive never seen a chromed trunnion. I do have the remnants of a Cdn Arsenals M-3 .50 cal here which has the trunnon worn through. The Canadian C1/C5A1 GPMGs had a wear plate (spring steel) designed in to the rear cartridge stop. The current issue 50 cals also have a wear plate which kind of snaps in place.
There are wear plates available in the US which will protect the trunnions from wear. I think they run $10.

alot of guys in the us cant get thier guns to run with any wear plates installed

maybe the guns specs are too tight? plate too thick?

running belts is MUCH easier its a real pain to pick up all those links on the ground a belt you just grab it fold/roll it up and away you go

links are still out there I got 2 K of links brand new in thier 20 link boxes from ww2 think i paid $80.00 Us about 6-7 years ago for them

I can't recall if there was any modification to the .50 trunnions to allow the protector plate, but the C5A1 had a corresponding area milled away to allow for the protector/cartridge stop plate.

Other than the difficulty of loading cloth without a belt loader machine, cloth really is the way to go.

I got around that cloth belt loading problem...

I just bought enough ammo loaded on belts, that I don't have to worry about reloading a belt......EVER!!!:D

There was indeed a second line modification for machining the trunnion to accept a wearplate on the 50 cal.....was to be done once you had wear through from link....
