Metis to defy new hunting restrictions
UPDATED: 2007-09-28 01:47:47 MST

EDMONTON -- Alberta Metis will defy provincial hunting
laws this fall by holding traditional community hunts
outside of government-designated harvesting areas,
their leader says.

Audrey Poitras, president of the Metis Nation of
Alberta, said if her people are charged they will
fight in court to draw attention to the province's
"regressive Metis harvesting policy."

"This is about tradition. This is not about somebody
deciding where we have the right to hunt," Poitras
said yesterday.

"If this has to end up in court, then we are prepared
to do that."

Earlier this year the government replaced an agreement
that allowed Metis to hunt and fish without a licence
throughout the province with new rules that restrict
such harvesting to areas near eight Metis settlements
and 17 communities in northern Alberta. The change was
made after an Alberta judge ruled that the old
agreement was not enforceable.

Alberta contends that the new policy that went into
effect this summer still complies with a 2003 Supreme
Court of Canada ruling that said Metis have the right
to hunt and fish for food.

Since the change, the Metis have tried unsuccessfully
to persuade Premier Ed Stelmach's government to
negotiate a less restrictive harvesting agreement, she
said.

One concern is the new policy excludes Metis in
central and southern Alberta. The government says it
has no records of Metis settlements in those areas.

I don't know, I'm kinda on both sides of the wall on this.

On one hand I'm pretty peeved that they figure they can just go hunt off the designated lands and I hope they get in some deep crap for it.

On the other hand, I give them credit for taking a stand against the government and that they have the balls to do something about what they believe in. While were sitting around with our thumbs up our asses in the spring with no bear hunt because we gave into "the man". At least they're making a stand on their hunting rights, we rely on the voting public, sad.

Oh, and before you say it, no, I have no first nations blood in me.

Me too, but it's a clear for me. If they want to hunt outside their designated areas, they can **GASP** buy a license. Or better yet, they can hunt all they want with their own traditional handmade bows and arrows. They should also have a maximum limit they can harvest outside their designated lands, so that they don't cull a load of deer in our hunting areas out of spite. Yes, they are OUR hunting grounds, since we can't hunt on THEIRS.

You know from what I'm reading here, you guys are a bunch of egotistical idiots with no background knowledge of the facts or laws... and if someone like oooo say me as a metis went around saying that maybe none of you should be allowed to hunt at all, or that there should be even more strict rules on you because not "all" of your hunting methods conform with what your ancestors did, I'd be ridiculed for that. Maybe you should really look at what you are saying on here before you click the post reply button.... I had absolutely no idea that this site was so racist!

Perhaps GARGOYlE you could explain to us "whiteys" just why the Metis should have any more special rights than the "White" men that were the originator of the Metis??

And just what part of the traditional Metis hunting culture did the use of motor vehicles, Atv's, & .300 Magnums come from?

True but then if average Joe set up a road block or hunted illegally, we'd be thrown in jail so fast.... it seems now that the minority groups have learned they CAN get away with that stuff!

Joe there not even a real nation, metis is indian for WANNABE! they should go to jail if there cought off the land given to them to hunt, this whole Im better than you and get everything handed to me BULLSH!T needs to come to an end before no one has any wildlife or fish left

its one thing to be proud of your heritage (and you should be) but its another to use that to gain over any other person, what makes 1 race so special that they need not pay taxes, need not comply with all laws written?

and before you open your mouth my 2 sisters hold status cards in Canada I chose NOT to and some of my best friends hold LEGITIMATE status cards from around the country, and you know what they hunt the same as I do or anyone else should by the hunting regulations given out by the province !

I personaly would like to know when canada plans on expanding its boarders to be able to settle all of the claims that have been made to overlap and take on 300% of the land available ?

Funny how a group of people wants special treatment based on their race and yell "RACISM" when another group objects. Is this really about oil? And for the record not every non-metis on CGN is a whitey.

Natives have had this rite for over a hundred years. Our wildlife have not suffered. Natives hold status cards. Natives don't pay taxes as long as they stay on the reserve.
No where in your statement did you mention metis rites. Are you posting in the wrong thread, or are you just ignorant to the facts?

actually I said racist due to the comments about other ways of taking care of it. Really now, do you think by making threatening and racist comments about topics that are much more in depth than you obviously have knowledge of that you are making yourself look better. Shake your heads. I have never and most likely will never use my status for that purpose as I buy and pay for all my hunting licenses yearly without a problem, I do not take any subsidies for anything, but I am still metis. So because I stay within my legal limits and purchase a license just like the rest of you, because I have a certain heritage background you still criticize me. You really like stereotyping people don't you! This isn't just directed towards savagefan but everyone that has made these comments on this thread. You are no better than the germans during WWII for saying those things now are you! And if you'd like to argue that fact, please do but argue the facts that you are criticizing a whole ethnic group.

what does it matter if its wannabe rights or actual native rights, as far as them hunting on there land ? yea right who are you trying to bullsh!t and the wildlife dosnt suffer ? thats why moose season was shut down in northwest bc and the treaty natives are asking the non treaties to stop whacking every moose they see! now whos ignorant ?

I'm not saying there aren't metis and full status Indians that aren't unethical when it comes to this, but at the same time can you say that you don't know any Caucasian's that are unethical as well. I highly doubt it. Maybe because of those few, you should not have any hunting rights either!

yeaok now I wont deny there are bad in both worlds BUT how many white people have you heard bragging they shot 25 moose in 2 weeks? or netted 3000 sockeye salmon and got $4 each for them ? yea there rights to sustinance food gathering
