Trying to fit a weaver 93AT rail to a TI M3 super 90 clone. Rail shipped with 8-40 screws, gun is NOT 8-40. 99% certain it is M4x0.7. Trying to avoid buying another rail. I can't find any M4 socket or machine screws that fit the weaver counterbore. Should I just run an 8-40 tap through it?

Is there enough meat there to change it to 8x40? Thats the only thing I'd be concerned with. If there's enough metal then have at er.

Yep...that's what I would do. Make it something common.
M4 is common. Any decent fastener place should have them, if not be able to have them in a day or two.

You're showing location in Mississauga. It's worth a shot to go to fastenal and pony up 35 cents for a couple M4 screws before modifying the reciever.

Trying to find the same type of screw that ships with the weaver is proving problematic. a regular cap screw will sit proud of the base, a low head cap screw won't fit the counterbore/countersink. Its a slotted oval head.

Gotcha. If it's an oval head you're not able to source, why not just use a flat head ? You may have to adjust the countersink on the rail slightly but it saves modifications to the reciever

Try a hobby shop if there is one nearby
RC cars use metric hardware and there’s a good chance the hobby shop has what you need

Bicycle shops usually carry metric screws in stainless or "rustfree" blued. Bought a set for replacememt CZ base screws. Was $3,- for a set of 4.

Sometimes I overthink things, and forget how easy it is to make aluminum do what I want. Ran a countersink on the mount and using shortened flat head cap screws. Not pretty, but it does the job.

Just me, but I’d leave it alone. Those screws can be found at any decent fastener shop, or easily found on Amazon.

You might have to shorten them to proper length, but that’s it.

If the caps are too big, just chuck them up in a drill press and use a file to cut some material from the underside. You won’t even see that they’ve been altered once installed.
