Hello everyone,

I finally got a round to stripping down my Mexican 1910 Mauser. At some point, it was hastily given a coat of varnish all over, including the metal fittings and sights. The condition of the rifle suggests that no one has had it apart in a long time.

This rifle has a numbered aluminum plate mounted on the underside of the butt which seems to be a police rack number according to a few different internet sites. The varnish was applied underneath the plate as well making me wonder if this could be a genuine finish for a police issued rifles.

I don't want to remove the varnish if it could have been applied while in Mexican service but I would like to apply raw linseed oil since the stock is dry.

What are you thoughts on removing the varnish?
