Anyone do this? I was wondering if one could replace the 7.62x39 FMJs with SPs of similar weight for hunting.

With steel cases, neck tension will be a royal PITA to adjust.

Not worth it... tried and it didn't go so well.

For hunting, there is likely some kind at the local sports store and Can tire.

I've never heard of a 7.62x39 HP that was meant for hunting. Many have used them for this purpose and reports are all over the place. Some guys report them punching through like a FMJ and finding the bullets with the noses bent over. Others have perfect expansion like a premium hunting bullet. Yet others report the bullets just coming apart on game and causing terrible wounds with lots of lost meat. I wouldn't trust them.

If you are reseating bullets that means you have a press or a Lee Loader or something. I'd just pickup some brass cases (Prvi makes them for a decent price) and work up a hunting load with proper hunting bullet. Save the non-hunting rounds for the range.

I made some MM with Hornady steel cases and Barnes XBT's. They gave me 2.5" groups at 100m. Plenty good for deer.

Like Mystic says, don't waste your time if your cases are steel. With the HP, it'll depend on the HP. Some will expand, some are like BTHP match bullets. For varmints only.

Yes, you can make very good MM. Pull the decapper rod from your sizing die and use it to neck size 75% of the neck. This will give you strong neck tension.

Seat the soft point of your choice.

I would not use the HP ammo for hunting. But I noticed CT was selling soft point for $16 a box. That would work.

S&B make some 125gr soft point that is around $20 a box.... Brass case, boxer primed so you can load it again.
Tradex has it, along with some MFS steel case SP that is $13 a box iirc.

Doesn't the 30-30 Winchester have the esteem it once had in Canada and where are your sporterized Enfield .303s ?

Here in the States we are matching our Border Patrol with the illegal Mexicans. :bangHead:

We are knee deep in $175 SKS rifles in new condition and tons of steel core ammo at about $200/1000.

Boys have to figure how to play with their new toys.

I use MFS 7.62x39mm and 7.62x54mm SP for hunting they work well. When those run out I might try these.

I "play" with the rifles below and I deer hunt in the woods with a Winchester 30-30 Trapper model with a 16 1/2 inch barrel. In Pennsylvania we can't use semi-autos to hunt with and my 30-30 has more horsepower and is far more accurate than a SKS.

My wife uses the MFS 7.62x39 SP ammo. Works well.
I have used and resized MM steel case ammo with SP bullets and found it worked adequate, but prefer to use commercial boxer brass for handloaded hunting ammo.

Exactly ^^ .... My thought was to try some 150gr 303 SPs I have laying around.

I just wanted to be able to pull the FMJs and seat the 150s after making a power adjustment.

I did this. Started with minus 3 grains and all the way up to the same charge as the milsurp, using a 150 gr RN. (RN does not go as far into the case as a spitzer). In a mini-30 and a SKS, no powder reduction worked just fine. Did not chrony.

Yep, no change in powder levels in the ones I did for 150gn swaps. I never noticed any neck tension issues, but; then again, I ran them through my factory crimp die. I use Hornady interlocks or Sierra Pro-hunters for 150gn bullets. Lots of deer have fallen to both the 123gn and the 150gn to convince me that they work fine.
