Has anyone hear heard of or tryed pulling the bullets on surplus 7.62x39 ammo then useing hornady 123gr sst .310 bullet and new powder in the steel case will this work to improve accuracy and terminal ballistics ?

I have a bunch of ammo that shoots 12" groups at 25 yards with an sks and I would like to try the Mexican match loads so I don't have to worry about buying brass and loseing it

I tried 130gr .308 speer hollow points with the original powder charge ,but the wide hollow points hung up on the flat edge of the barrel.
I then re seated the FMJ bullets to a longer OAL. This resulted in groups shrinking from 4.5" to 4.25" @100m.
Then I had a couple beers and decided that further experementation would wait until someone gave me some
proper bullets....

...still waiting

12" at 25 yards??? Are you closing the wrong eye?

If that is the group you are getting then no bullet substitution will make much difference.

I have made Mexican match using the 123 gr Hornady Soft Point bullet, which I assume would be an accurate bullet. I tried the same powder charge, a half grain less and a half grain more. At 100 yards, accuracy improved, but not much.

This ammo was shot in a match grade bolt rifle, a SKS and a CZ858.

This is the rig I used for the test results shown above.

The gun can shoot I have had ammo for it that shot around 3" groups at 100 yards but this old ammo that I came across laying around the local gun shop is funky I was shooting from a bench trying to zero a scope at 25 yards and it was all over the board ... Not the scope it was solid and I also
Shot some same time thru the irons with the same results , then I started thinking about reloading them with new powder and horady bullets

Ah ha! OK, that makes sense. Then Mex match would be a perfect use for it. I pull 10 and dump all the powder and divide by 10 for the average. Collect all the powder and throw the same amount back into the cases. If you have a sizing die, pack out the decapper and back the die out 2 revs and neck size all the cases to uniform the neck tensions. The result should be ammo about as good as the gun.

i don't know if they still sell it, but hornady came out with steel cased surplus using their 123gr poly tipped bullets. at lebaron it was a 50 pack for i think $39.99, which now that i think about it is costly!

Budget shooter supply has the hornady 123gr bullets for 25$/100 probably 10$ for powder and I'm not sure what 100 rds of surplus 7.62x39 is worth but a box of priv soft points at the gun shop is 29$/20 , Mexican match is looking good for the old sks

So, I pulled 10 bullets, dumped powder out, weighed it, average weight was returned to each case. Seated 123V-max's and it shot Worse! Gonna try it again and play with powder amount, I think V=max needs less/more than original Czech fmj's. Just my observation.
