Can anyone tell me if MFS ammo is corrosive? I am under the impression that it is not. I shot some 7.62 x 54R MFS out of my Moisin and just cleaned it like I would normally but to be on the safe side I followed up with a wipe of Windex.

Thanks everyone. Steve.

It's supposed to be non-corrosive. If it's as bad as the 9mm MFS I had, it's filthy stuff. The zinc coating leaves a mess on everything. But that's to be expected with cheap ammo. Bring cleaning supplies.....

It's not corrosive.

With that said, it's going to be just as filthy as the raunchiest of surplus ammo that is corrosive. It just won't leave corrosive salts in your rifle. You'll still have a hell of a clean ahead of you after a day at the range.

Thanks everyone! I noticed the 7.62 x 54R I shot left a huge amount of residue. My baarel looked like my Snider does after I shoot black powder..
How about the Chinese military 7.62 x 39? I have some that is copper washed steel case.

Thanks again. Steve.

In all honesty, I don't like shooting any of the lacquered ammunition. It is messy and can be hard to clean.

I'm getting fussy in my old age.

I like to shoot but I also like my firearms enough not to abuse them or shoot them out.

I don't know what it is about the MFS or even some of the Chinese non corrosive stuff but it just doesn't cut it for me. I would rather take the time to reload.

I've been selling off my corrosive or lacquered ammo at gun shows. Don't miss it one bit.

I will admit though, if the cases aren't lacquered, I will shoot it. It is usually cleaner all around but still requires lots of hot water.

SOME of that will be corrosive. Best I can tell, and I may be wrong, if you find Chinese 7.62x39 from the 70's onward, it will be non-corrosive. Anything earlier probably is.

I have plenty of experience with Chinese 7.62x39 from the 60's. All of the stuff I have fired is in that greenish brown casing that some, if not most, of the Eastern European stuff is in. It's corrosive, dirty and actually shoots pretty well out of my SKS and 858, better out of the 858 but that's a design issue. I never had a misfire or any other problem out of thousands of rounds and like most surplus it's quite cheap. I'd recommend it.

In fact, I recommend pretty much all surplus 7.62x39. The absolute WORST I've ever fired was some Polish stuff from 1987: It was dirty (even for surplus ammo) and I had about 25 dead primers, accuracy was fine, maybe a little worse than average. Still though, for under 200 bucks for like 1000 or so rounds, it was still worth the money, and cleaning a rifle isn't particularly hard.
