I am trying different things to get my SKS accurate. My SKS doesn't like MFS ammo. I don't think it's the ammo because others seem to report that MFS ammo is okay? It's the zinc plated steel cased stuff.

The headstamp on the ammo is Barnaul. Does it mean it's the SAME ammo as Barnaul? Is it worth trying out the Barnaul 7.62x39 to see it that's more accurate than the MFS? Thanks!

As I under stand, They are made in the same factory. That doesn't mean they are the same though.

I have some Barnaul in 7.62x39 and its brass plated steel case. I shoot it in my CZ 858 and don't have any problems with accuracy (its more like combat accurate not precision accurate)

Give it a try!

sorry, it is not the zinc plated steel. the Mfs ammo I have is the green lacquered steel stuff. looks like the Barnaul ammo at wholesale sports.

Barnaul and MFS are one in the same. I bought earlier "MFS" stuff, which at the time I thought was made in Hungary, but it's actually made in Russia.
Both fire PERFECTLY from all of my SKS's and are actually quite accurate and clean. Both resemble the surplus fodder but are non-corrosive.

Lets all be honest though, the sks will eat anything. You could take a big dump in the chamber and it'll fire out an fmj at 2400fps for ya.

It's true! I've taken a big dump in both my ESS KAY ESSES chamber and fired out a seriously corn (peanut?) riddled FMJ. But seriously, mine runs at 2450 fps! :)

Is it the only ammo you've tried? The MFS I mean, not the corn riddled poo....

Both my SKS reliably fire anything vaguely shaped like a 7.62x39 round. Not sure what you're expecting for accuracy, with the Barnaul I can ring the 200 yard gong at my range pretty consistently with open sights. Minute of grapefruit is achievable at 100, though I did shoot a few nicer groups with Czech surplus.

Strange that your rifle doesn't like MFS but these things happen. You can never tell what's going to work in your particular rifle so yes, it's worthwhile to try different ammo. Before I say anything else, I think it's important to establish what I consider accurate from an SKS using surplus ammo: I consider 2.5" groups or less at 100m awesome. I found the Barnaul 123gr. fmj to be a little more accurate than the MFS 123gr. fmj that I have, but my MFS ammo is from a year or so ago when they ran the zinc plated cases. I also found that the MFS I have runs a little hotter at 2410 fps compared to the Barnaul at 2330 fps. I'll be going out for a week or so after the weekend and I need to set up a scope I swapped onto the SKS, so I'll try to get some paper results with both if I still have some MFS left that isn't SP. I also have a case of the LCW non corrosive HP ordered from Canam, but I don't expect to see it for quite a while.
