MFS 7.62x39 FMJ 123gr- Steel Core?

Hi Guys,

I am a new member at Range Burlington which, as many of you already know, has prohibited the shooting of steel core ammunition. I'm trying to figure out if the ammo I have for my SKS is lead core or not...

It's this MFS ammo:

I know the soft point MFS ammo is definitely lead core, does anyone know about the FMJ? I'd assume it is, but I don't want to take any chances!

Has anyone pulled/cut one of these to see if there is any steel under the jacket?

Yep, lead core... shoot it all the time. Very good stuff, accurate, and non-corrosive.

wont work. The jacket is magnetic.

MFS is some of the best relatively cheap ammo you can shoot in 7.62x39, bimetal jacket, lead core.

Thats the only ammo I shoot with my cz and my sks cause I'm not a clean nanny when it comes to my guns.

It is NOT steel core but it will fail the magnet test.

The MFS ammo I recently got was actually Barnaul ammo. The cases are stamped with БПЗ letters. Russian for Barnaul Cartridge Factory (Барнаульский Патронный Завод).
They are lead core, copper washed steel jacketed with steel casings. Non-corrosive primer, of course.

No issues with them so far in both 7.62x39 and 7.62x51. Shoot as straight as I can and cycle well. Many indoor ranges do not welcome such ammo due to the steel jacket sparking against their backstops.

Note that not all MFS ammo can come from Barnaul. I have MFS 7.62x51 not marked with БПЗ stamp and it looked different, too. But the basic construction is all the same from what I have seen so far.

EXACTLY. It's steel jacketed lead core, and not permitted at many ranges. I wish retailers would be clear about this. Buyer beware.

Its really good quality ammunition, but a bit too pricey for blasting off loads by the hundreds.

You can always cut the end off one bullet for inspection and see if it will pass the range rules.

In Halifax I can get the non-corrosive FMJ for $9.50 a box where as the corrosive surplus stuff is going for $6.50 a box. I don't mind paying a little extra for the non-corrosive.
