For static defence, there is no better machinegun than a water-cooled maxim. The problem is that static defence became obsolete right about the time the Maginot line was over-run.
Maxims were still being used in the Donbass War. Even in quad mounts with interesting sight arrangements. Maybe they still are being used?
Trophy MG08 's used to be seen on monument pads in N.S. with numerous coats of what looked like bitumen or locomotive paint on them mostly in more rural towns. I wonder what became of these?
Claven2 and Fat Tony. Thanks for input. 2 aspects I would offer is that even today static/fortified/obstacles defences are still used but primarily to channel the enemy in a certain direction. So perhaps not much has changed in this respect but the second point is that the demise of the heavy MG is accredited to mortars and light artillery. So not many nations invested in this weapon system until of course WWII came along. Of course different books have different perceptions.

In post 146 a teasing glimpse of the 08/15 spare parts wallet, the larger ersatz version not the standard leather spares box and wallet for the inside.
