I have a question... which part of an MG08 Maxim would be considered the "receiver" or specifically, the registared part of the gun, and which parts could be sold as "parts"?? Thanx

Well, the maxim has a box-shaped receiver consisting of a top, right, left, bottom, and back plate. If it is regulated anything like the 1919a4, or m2hb, then i'm guessing the right side plate is the "receiver"? Or perhaps the "left side plate", whatever side the data engraved on?

I don't believe it is the entire rear frame, either left or right side plate, but i could be wrong ... Anybody else able to confirm what is the receiver?

Call the CFC, ask to speak to someone in the Firearms Technical Analysis Section, if it is important, ask for the answer in writing.

Back when we were allowed to collect guns in their original form in canada, I owned perhaps twenty examples of Maxim MG-08, MG-08/15 and one superb LMG-08/15. Without exception, the MAIN serialwas on the hinged top cover, BUT almost all small parts were marked with the same number.(on original pieces only, of course) A Maxim assembled from random-serialled parts would have many numbers, but they wouldn't be considered as serial numbers. Like a good puppy, all of mine were duly registered using the Maker and Serial info marked on the top cover.

The serial number is on the left side plate of an 08/15 as well as the top cover, but as Rossguy says the old way of registering a FA was any number that was visible. The top cover had the maker, year and serial number where as the side plate had the serial number only. As Rossguy and are contemporaries (he's older though :)##.....) we have seen it all: from the ZB with the serial number 20-0-1 from the left side of the trigger housing to the Radom's with the model number utilized as a serial number. The 20-0-1 was the selector setting for full auto, safe and single shot on eary ZB's. Go figure.... Things are much better now, and if any doubt call the CFC tech support. The boys know their stuff and are pleasure to deal with.

Thanx for the replies guys... will check with the CFC for details. Another question... what would a liquid cool MG08 with original bluing and stock finish be worth as a dwatt? Also still has original bipod., in reasonable condition. Thanx

With a bipod it will be an MG 08/15 (solid water cooling jacket) or MG 08/18 (ventilated jacket) not an MG 08 which normally had a sled mount. Feel free to contact me off line as I am researching all of these that were brought back to Canada after WWI as war trophies. "Seaforth" seaforth72@hotmail.com

MG-08/15 was normally found with the bipod mount, and the MG-08's were normally found with the sled mount, but I did own several MG-08's with very neat four-legged mounts that would have been used nailed to a post or fired from a lower position on the ground. I recall hearing them referred to as "Zeppelin Mounts" but as I never owned a Zeppelin, can't confirm. The LMG-08/15 with the perforated barrel sleeve clipped into a mount on the aircraft itself.
Value of a dewat MG-08? How heavy is it X price per pound (or kilogram) for MSS (mild steel scrap). Dolf Goldsmith wrote the bookyou really need if your interest really runs that deep.

These guys got dewat / deactivated beltfed guns. No mg08, but they got some other old goodies. Never dealt with them, but maybe they can give you a good estimate on your item? Vickers for $3500, maxim $1900, mg42 $5000. Prices vary, no pattern i can see (age, origin, appearance, quality, etc?) but they're all pretty expensive!

edit: Offtopic, but could somebody pm me regarding the mg42 deactivated value. I am interested, but i want to know if that is a good price?

edit 2nd time: was thinking mg08/15, or whatever the german one is with that funny hump on it is.
The maxim for $1900 similar to yours?

Maybe you'd prefer a working MG42? Semi-auto non-restricted rebuild . . .

marstar.ca/gf-MG-34/MG-34-index.shtm
Working on my own mg42 build already, no not the 34 ;). I cannot use my original receiver, so i have phoned the cfc, they say i can weld it up into a deactivated receiver. I'm planning to sell it to fund getting some receiver stampings made up or something for my semi auto build.

Receiver is the only part you can't buy from marstar, so if anyone wanted to finish the "deactivation", and buy the other parts from marstar, they can.

If $5000 for a deact. 42 is a decent price, minus welding work, and the cost of required parts from marstar, that makes my receiver worth a pretty penny ;). I'm just looking to put a pricetag on my stuff. Got myself a 1944 Steyr (BNZ) manufacture mg42 receiver, for any of you collectors whom are interested by german manufacturing codes.

$5000 for a chopped and welded MG42 is so insane its drooling on the floor

RIGHT HERE on cgn i found a MINT dewat 42 for $1500

2 weeks later another came up for the same price and it came with AA tripod
