mg42 still around...

I would send pics but don't know how ..i do have some pics on my facebook when i used to take it and others to winona range ...there was one time when a very cute blond girl was feeding the belt to me ...a very good day a very good memory

Ran into a WW2 Vet years ago and chatted him up.He said they used captured MG42's but they took to cutting of some of the coils to lower the cycling rate as they were drawing too much friendly fire.Faster than the Bren when unaltered? Harold

From my memory, the rate is super fast - up to 1800 rpm on some models!
I read somewhere that soldiers were forbidden to fire a string longer than 250 in one pull for fear of overheating!

True but I think they carried spare barrels to replace the worn out ones.

I wonder what the modern german army is using now...

Along the lines of the mg42, here is a scanned 9-page pamphlet on the illusive mg45, in a museum in russia. I don't speak or read russian though, but the pics are interesting :D. Enjoy

No problem Desert Fox, glad somebody appreciates the information :D. Looks like more than just the mg45 in there, some other interesting pictures too... I'm guessing prototypes?

I'm glad the mg3 took from the mg42, and not that hideous mg45 ! Looks like the germans were getting a little desperate at that point, with massive cutbacks on quality (note the flash hider is part of the receiver lol).

I am curious though, anyone have any idea's why they did not further adopt the mg42v (first pic)? It appears they had eliminated the need for the booster + cone, this would give them a major cutback on expences considering the amount of machinework the barrel bushing, cone and booster assembley seem to require.

The MKL entry also includes several on-line videos of the MG42 assembly & disassembly, as well combat action, plus there's a contemporary one that shows a U.S. owner (lucky guy) letting loose with an entire 250 round belt in one long burst. Not good for the barrel, but certainly fun to do, at least once.

One of the funniest things I've heard in a WW2 interview was a US GI's description of hearing German machine gun fire for the first time, he said they had only trained against their own stuff, so when the door opened on Omaha Beach he heard this sound (the MG42) and asked his buddy "what the hell IS that" they sounded so different he didn't recognize it as an MG.

C6 is gas operated, with a tipping block linked to the bolt carrier.
Any similarity would be in the feed system.
