Well, here is my been there done that at least 20 times carbine. Many places this thing has been. What do you think the words scratched into the stock are all about? Its in 8x57 & supposed to be chinese so why the latin script?

That is one cool a$$ old carbine. Ooozes history. Literally. =D

I Googled "INTAN" and one of the things that popped up was this...

Where did you find it?

That Arisaka has seen better days. That is also one hell of a crack in the buttstock too.

thats normal, they were made with two pieces of wood glued or dovtailed together and its not uncommon to find them worked lose or pulling apart.

I found it at the orangeville fairgrounds.

I remember seeing it but didn't spend enough time looking at it as I was looking for potential Mausers.

I didn't know that, but I don't think it is good for the rifle in the long run. Mind you, this Arisaka looks pretty good considering possible foreign service.

Wish your rifle could talk...

What is that bit you found under the band? A map fragment? My crappy old monitor is having issues with the writing.

So much more interesting than yet another Tradex refurb. You going to repair the stock?

I already did. The splice line stands out more in the pics cause the glue wasn't dry yet. I wanted to make sure everything still fit before the glue dried so I reassembled it. The brass piece has me stumped but I think its astrological in origin.

Identifying marks ground away, stock carvings of unknown origin, caliber conversion done who-knows-when, and a barrel band possibly shimmed with a piece of a compass face or ###tant chart?

Funny, my Marstar "Mystery Mauser" seems so much less mysterious now =D

8x57???....

who did that??

Would it be safe to fire?

Chinese nationalists mostly. Not all that hard if you think about it, after all you can make 7.7 jap from 8x57 cases. Rebore, trim a thread off the barrel & give 'er a cleaning with a 8x57 chamber reamer. What surprises me is how worn the bore is. Unlike most Chinese mausers this wasn't used all that long (1945- maybe 1955) but its beat. Surprising part is the carbine conversion is newer than the bore so it served as a normal length 99 in 8mm then was converted to a carbine.

I don't know if my CKS mauser is anything to go by, but the bore is a sewer pipe. I'm tempted to build some light loads and try it out, but then I remember that I value my life more than shooting that gun. Anyways, awful bores seem typical of Nationalist weapons.

Interestingly, mine also came with a piece of paper tucked under the rear sight covered with Chinese characters. A Chinese friend translated, it is a name and an arsenal supply list of some sort. So cool, I wish I had been a collector when there were more relics of the People's Revolution coming into this country.

Does TradeEx sell Arisaka's? I don't see any on their website.

Would a arisaka stock that costs less than 100$ cause any problem to import?

I'm no lawyer, but I can't see why not? Numrich has sent me stuff that I thought they were going to drown me in paperwork to have shipped here. But not a problem & a "Thank You" for doing business with them...

Surplusrifleforum has a good jap selection that cod have a member willing to help you out. Ended up helping a few members there

Now that is a nifty old rifle. I bought a few "Chinese" Mausers years back, just to see what they were like. Oh boy! I recall reading that, once the Mausers were worn too badly for actual firing, they were used for drill practice until some of the butt plates were worn thin. Well, I got a couple that were beyond worn. It is difficult to fathom the amount of handling those poor old rifles must have had to wear them like that!:p

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I did register them, just so the country would be safe!:p I doubt that a couple of them would have even made effective clubs..... but they are registered, thank heavens!:bsFlag:
