You might call these high end or you might call them budget, its all relative after all . For me these are mid range scopes. I have 4 scopes (that I put in the same class with regard to price, features and use) that I will be reviewing over the next little while. All are MRAD click scopes and have ffp mil type reticles (except sightron!!!), variable in the 20 ish power range. I started a post per scope and will add to each as time and info becomes available. I apologize if I don't review a feature or performance aspect that you are looking for but I may not mount all of the scopes to do full review for quite a while since I already have a scope in mind to keep for myself. I picked up the others largely to check out and for future use on my growing stable of guns, plus buying gun stuff is fun!!
As received looks typical of the elite series, with craptastic scope covers and all. Nice packaging, well wrapped, includes shade, allen wrenches and manual
Glass
Great clarity, colour and brightness right through all magnifications as good or better then could be expected for an ffp scope at this price point. No slouch in the glass area, I could not detect any significant edge distortion. This glass is noticeably better then my old elite 4200.
Controls
Hate the turret knob style but it did have good solid clicks with just a hint of mush that it must have inherited from my old 6500. This scope had the smoothest side focus and mag adjustment of all 4 scopes however I did not like the sf cap style and it was good thing it adjusted so well as it was not the best to grip. Easy manipulation of controls with gloves on.
Reticle
g2dmr - Thought I'd like it more, a little too beefy at high mags for my liking. It does work well though and present lots of info without too much clutter
As received flip up caps included!! How cool is that, too bad bushnell can't learn from this. Wrapped well, comes with sunshade, manual etc
Glass - gonna sound like a broken record but all 4 scopes had very good glass and I was quite surprised that it was so hard to see a difference. I tried all 4 under various conditions.
Controls
BEST clicks of all 4 scopes. No question, try all 4 scopes one after another and the sitron has the crispest, nicest elevation and windage BUT as received I needed vice grips to adjust the side focus, magnification adjustment was nice almost as good as the bushnell et6245. Love the windage/elevation caps, hated the side focus cap and with it being as stiff as it was made it hard to adjust while holding on target. Also no yardage numbers on sf scale.
Reticle
No FFP!!! Typical mildot, works fine but not as cool as the latest xmas tree reticles
Could not get my hands on the above YET but did pick up and 16x sfp with ebr-1 and mrad clicks
I like it...O stops!!!! It might be a shim type system but at least it has em for when I need to dial back real quick to engage a close up target...ya right!! I do like 0 stops and since owning a scope that has em it is a feature I highly value. Not fair to compare glass since it is only a 16 x scope but I can say it is great quality glass. This one is made in the Philippines so does not have any japanese fairy dust sprinkled on it to give it superior scoping powers but it is a great scope all in all. The best adjustment knob grips of all the scopes I tried, second best clicks after sitron, best reticle as well
Bushnell HDMR Elite Tactical Rifle Scope 34mm Tube 3.5-21x 50mm Side Focus 1/10 MIL
Look at the elevation/windage knobs compared to the others...they are huge!!! This scope seems massive out of the box but when you put it beside the others it does not seem so big. Bit of an illusion with the 34mm scope tube I guess. Comes with the standard gear and crappy scope caps that can go right in the garbage. Initial impressions were that it was kind of fugly out the box with the short tube length in from of the w/e controls but it grows on you, and from a practical standpoint it keeps the scope a little more compact. The turret grips and side focus cap I would normally not like as with other elite scopes, but the shear massive size and that they collapse down to lock in place kind of won me over as far as how well they work. It does bulk the scope up though. It will be used for casual shooting so not really a concern BUT I need to use gloves as I do a lot of winter shooting. I think it these knobs will work very well.
If I had to pick a winner on what glass was best of the 4 it would be the this scope. That being said there was VERY little difference between it and the 6-24 bushnell or Sitron.
Ok...started to jot down my initial impressions. Not as organized as I'd like but I will add to the posts and try and rank the scopes as I get more info. I can say I'd be happy with any one of them as I received them. I do have personal favorites already but none have been tried in the field yet so that could change. I have an empty spot right now so I HAVE to keep one scope for sure.
How much are you selling the hdmr for? Feel free to PM me.
I have the 6-24 tactical with standard Mil-Dot on all my long guns and find the side focus very easy to adjust, smooth yet stiff enough to hold.
I like the turrets and find they are easy to zero and very easy to adjust with gloves. I often adjust without looking and have no problem feeling the clicks. The scopes track very well and are reliable.
I've had no issue with the glass and can look through it for long periods without issue.
