Late in Jack O'Connor's career, he wrote an article on 7mm calibre rifles. He stated how many hundreds of game animals he had either shot, or seen shot, with the 7x57 Mauser and how many hundreds of game animals he had either shot, or seen shot, with the 7mm Remington Magnum, and he wrote that he couldn't see any difference in the killing power between the two calibres!
He said a good hit with either was a dead animal and a poor hit with either was a wounded animal.
The only true way to make a determine how much velocity you would lose or gain is to take your 30" barrel and cut it down an inch or two at a time. No two barrels are the same, and even if the chambers were cut with the same reamer I doubt a fair comparison could be made.
I did this. Used a hack saw to cut a 30" 308 target barerl down to about 24" As I recall, th velocity DROPPED about 25 fps per inch.
The only caliber I know of that gets slower velocity out of a real long barrel is a 22LR.
Just read the specs on Tikka's sight. My barrel is actually 24 3/8"
Tikka you say? I had a Tikka 7mag, it was a slug. Couldnt get over 2850 with 160's and I tried a pile of different powders. Barely got 3000 with 150 TTSX, again trying a bunch of different powders. It's been a few years but I seem to recall retumbo and rl 25 giving the best velocites.
I will guess that you were using the loading data from the modern, lawyer approved, loading manuals, to get what you consider maximum loads!
Yes I was, that being said everytime I started to go over book max those primers would flatten right out and bolt lift was starting to get a bit stiff. But who knows maybe things were fine and I was reading pressure signs wrong...was reading things the best I could at the time.

Only getting 2700-2800 fps out of my 7mm Rem Mag with 160 Barnes TSX over 59.5 grains IMR4831 (1.5 grains over Barnes max recommended)
It would seem I'm shooting a belted "magnum" 7mm-08......hmmmm
Maybe Reloder 22 or continue to push the 4831 further. No signs of pressure yet
Mike
