Never thought I would see the day, one of my work horse AR's rusted and action jammed shut  it was put away in the safe for a few months in a medium dirty condition (which has never been a problem). Long story short, my house is getting a face lift therefore my air exchanger is off and humidity is slightly higher. Today I pulled my guns for an inspection, noticed some rust deposit on the barrel near the FH shim, this area gets lots of crap because of blow back from the Krinkov, anyway, I went to open the action to Safe the gun, but can't........!!!!! it's jammed shut.

I separated the upper and lower, and used some leverage to pull the carrier and bolt out, it finally did. The carrier and bolt show some surface rust discoloration (which comes off with a cloth) and the firing pin has some minor pitting
The front of the barrel @ the FH where the rusting was has some surface pitting

Cleaned it all up, barrel pitting looks very much surface cosmetic and I will likely change the firing pin. Other guns look fine however!

I guess spring cleaning is way overdue :(

thats gutta suck........

humidity in my house is high...basement is old stonewall and water comes in...usually have 1/2 cm of water on the concrete floor. entire house always has some humidity....... I keep my guns clean and drenched in CLP oil (driping wet if its long term storage, its gross to pick them up! lol).

I hope what happened to you never happens to me...I think Ill clean those things tomorrow, havnt fired anything in a month!

I tend to keep them externally clean and dry (other than some functional lubrication), gun will be fine, it just has a new battle scar :D I laugh cuz most of my guns are not safe queens and see environmental abuse (although I don't go out of my way to abuse them), I do take reasonable steps to take care of them, but cleaning is not a high priority.

I was just very surprised to see this situation happen, the gunk must of absorbed moisture and having it sit in it for a while caused this to happen. Lesson learned, I will now clean my guns more....... heck no! I just need to shoot them more :D

That's gotta suck. Can you put in weeping tile or something to get rid of the moisture?

That's a shame. Glad you discovered it before the damage was even worse. It's a shame you didn't get any pictures to share with us.
