Might have made a mistake

Yesterday I was sitting in the bush and rattled in a buck. I had a clean shot at the typical 4x4 that would have scored around 120 or so. I decided I didn't want to take the shot and let him wander off. That was the only deer I saw yesterday and last Sunday.

I was out today and saw lots of game unfortunately it was moose and mule deer and I only have a whitetail tag. We did see a couple whitetail does way off in the distance but with the warmer temps there was nothing really moving and I've heard the rut has ground to a halt in the area.

Starting to wonder if I made a mistake letting that buck pass yesterday. Might end up with another pot of tag soup.

Serves you right... Never pass up on opening day what you will regret at the end of the season... You need to decide what you want to do... Cober your wall or fill your freezer... I likes me some pepperettes... I always fill the freezer
 
I passed because I have a few days left but with rut shut off and the temps being on the plus side it's not looking promising. I'm kinda torn between wanting a good buck and filling my freezer. My hunting career hasn't been a long one but I think I've been spoiled with good luck in the past when it came to bucks.
 
We have the luxury on Vancouver island of having a bag limit of 2 bucks so the first fat fork buck I see gets a pill, then I look for his grandpa. 'Meat first' is my motto!
 
I have never regretted not shooting as much as I have regretted, at times, shooting.

Whether it was a difficult shot that got a little messy, or a set of antlers with ground shrinkage, there is more regret for me after shooting than by letting something go. If you let it go, you didn't really want it. Why kill it if it is not what you want? Just so you can say you killed something?

With the meat we have in the freezer now, I am a trophy hunter until the last afternoon of my season. At that point I will be a meat hunter, and may just take a fawn over a doe if the chance presents itself. In the mean time, only a truly big buck is in any danger from me, and I expect I will pass on several shots before the season ends. I already have passed on at least 4 easy buck shots and a dozen or more easy does. No regrets now, no regrets later - even if I don't fill any more tags.
