Hello, I live in BC and was at a hunting shop and asked about laws surrounding migratory game bird hunting. The fella said that you need the special permit (knew that), but he also said that you can't be on crown land and that you NEED to be on someone's property of whom you have their permission. I live in BC, can anyone confirm this for me please? I didn't think you needed to be on private property. Thanks

Are you in the lower mainland? You need a federal migratory gird permit AND you will need the Fraser Valley special area Liscence. When I lived there 4 years ago they published maps showing where when you could hunt.

I killed alot of geese and spent alot of time not killing them.LOL. and never once tread off crown land! Maybe the laws have changed but it seems to me your gunshop guy might be confusing the rules for LULU island with the rest of the lower mainland.

I am guessing you asked about snow geese on LULU island?

Go shoot some Canadas on the Pitt

Boy. Where do they find these people?

Of course you need the Fraser Valley permit (you knew that).

Then you need the Federal Migratory Game bird permit available from most postal outlets.

Then, making sure you follow the guidelines of what dykes you may or may not be permitted to be near, go to the public foreshore of the various islands, estuaries, ocean fronts and river fronts in the lower mainland and go hunting.

Of course if you hunt on private land land, as in any kind of hunting you need permission.

A lot of private land is tied up by AWP, a private hunting club that costs a lot of money to belong to.

Westham Island hunting in Ladner is controlled by another club.

People with boats have better opportunities.

Bottom line:

There are some fantastic water fowling opportunities in the lower mainland it is worth while figuring out the rules, getting a canoe and taking the time to get out there. There is a certain joy in having a 5 bird morning in sight of knarled morning rush hour traffic!

Do try and be polite to dog walkers and sundry nosey others. explain what you are doing and if need be explain politely that any further interfernce of your hunt will result in them breaching provincial wild life act regulations!
Do try and be polite though and if you can go on weekday mornings and avoid the weekend.

And remember if you can't see the crows feet of a goose's eye he aint coming down! Good duck hunting is also to be had.

Seems like a lot of hoops to go through for some sky carp. Come on over to Ontario, were infested with them. Migratory Bird Stamp only, and most farmers are more than happy to have you reduce their numbers. I haven't come up with enough recipes, to make the meat hardly palatable anymore. Although, getting Jerky made out of them is pretty good.:)

I live in the Okanagan and way in behind Westbank are lots of good duck hunting places. So the general consensus is that this guy at the gunshop was feeding me garbage. Cool. Do I have you send away for this migratory bird permit or can I get it right then and there at the post office?

You can pick up the migratory game permit at the post offices. The online site for canada post mentions the outlets that sell the stamp but in my experience all the pst offices in the fraser valley sell them. The special area permit among other things is a way to make sure you have liability insurance when hunting in an urban area (I hate this permit) and is sold at all local hunting shops. You will need to show that you have 2 million liability insurance (insurer name and number of the policy). Most guys use their house insurance or are members of the BC wildlife federation that automatically gives you this.

There are published no shooting areas and certain municipalities such as Surrey have no firearm discharge bylaws (doesn't seem to stop the gang members from shooting it out just us hunters!). The no huting on crown land is bogus. There are still great areas to shoot you just have to work a little harder to find them.

Geese open on the 15th go get some!

AWP= Associated Wildlife Preserve

It is actually $1,000,000 liability insurance required

You also need an Ontario Small Game License in addition to the Federal Migratory Game Permit. Need both.

The special area permit applies to the fraser valley and several other municipalities in the region. It is a heavily urbanized area, they require you to have liability insurance to hunt within the region. Outside of the listed municipalities on the "fraser valley special areas permit" you don't require it.

So in BC, particularly the Okanagan, you can hunt migratory birds on crown land and don't have to be on private property? I just want to confirm that because the guy at the shop was pretty adamant about it. Thanks

"...pretty adamant about it..." They always are. Read the hunting regs. Mind you, some Crown Land may be posted, but certainly not all of it.
The Migratory Bird Permit comes from the Migratory Bird Act. A long time treaty between Canada and the U.S. It covers ducks and geese mostly.
