Does anyone know if all Mil Spec or BUIS (flip up, fixed, front or rear) sights are made to a set height industry standard? Im talking about height from the center line of the barrel to top of front sight base or rear sight height from the flat top picatinny rail to center of rear peep base.
Can you mix and match different companies front sight and rear sights and still be on paper. I know my old A2( full carry handle) is higher than my removable carry handle for my M4 clone but the front delta frame front sights seem the same height
I always thought that AR15 sights were a little on the high side. Especially the front. Does the buffer tube get in the way causing the rear to be high to get proper cheek weld ( causing tbe front to be high) or is because someone decided that a fridge door type carry handle would look nifty on a carbine.
These questions are coming up because I have a 14.5 AR barrel that I want to install into a new build. It doesn't come with the A2 front sight installed. Im not sure if I want to go traditional old school delta front sight or put a clamp on picitinny rail gas block and use flip up buis type. Any help would be appreciated

"F" Height Front Sight Base

Front sight bases come in two basic varieties. One is the front sight base intended for use on carbines and rifles with fixed carry handle A2 uppers, the other (The "F") is intended for carbines with flattop uppers.

In order to ensure compatibility with the various aftermarket rear back up iron sights, the "F" is more desirable.

Unfortunately not all "F" height front sight bases are marked with the "F" (LMT for example), and some that are marked are not true to the correct height.

So if you have a F marked FSB, you can buy Flip-ups and Mil-spec carry handles.

If you do not have an F marked FSB, you can either buy a mil-spec handle and buy a taller front post, or buy a commercial sized carry handle, or buy a mil-spec flip up rear and a taller front post.

In your case I would recommend you get an "F" marked delta Front Sight Gas Block (if you go that route) to be compatible with the all the rear BUIS.

ctcs, If one was to get the proper F front sight for a flat top upper where would one have it installed on the barrel. My barrel isn't drilled for the tapered pins to secure it. It's a one shot deal to drill them right?

Armalite makes a clamp on version. I have one, but I'm not sure if it's F height or not, it doesn't say.
It works with my Carry Handle upper, so that might answer that question.

If you get the pin on version, some people have drilled and tapped them for set screws. If done well, it should mount up solid.

Just a couple ideas if no one chimes in with pinning services.

My Windham MPC doesn't have a F marked front sight but they sell a sight post to increase it b .040" which allows for MBUS sights to be used. Currently the carry handle that comes with it works with the factory front sight.

Using a red dot sight, the front sight won't matter according to Windham support team.
