this may be a stupid question but i have a new riflr that i want to start comatishion shooting and was just wondering if i shoot mil surplus ammo will it hurt the barrel?. I wanta shoot a few just to get the feel and such. But i dont know if it will hurt the barrel. I have herd that mil surplus ammo is some times under sized and may rattle in the barrel all of the bullets are .303-.305mm. any info would be veary helpfull Thanks Andrew

I wouldn't hesitate to shoot military surplus ammo in my 308 unless it was corrosive, or not copper jacketed or copper washed. I would do some research on this particular ammo and see what others have to say about it, and whether its corrosive primed. I'd judge it mostly by how well it shoots in my gun.

I have seen this ammunition shot in a precision rifle, and it did not do badly. Didn't shoot as well as target grade, but certainly good enough for basic zeroing and practice.

Y'know, I was wondering about that... thanks, it's good to hear.

Personally, my Competition rifle & Match grade barrel sees nothing but match grade bullets...................;)

I am of the school that you train/practice with the equipment/ammunition that you are going to compete with............

But as long as the primers are not corrosive then you have nothing to worry about.

SKBY.

Some military ammo is surplused off because it had problems. These problems might not be a problem for us (too much muzzle flash) or, it might be that some of the ammo was accidently loaded with pistol powder (CBC).

If surplus ammo is bad it will be mentioned here pretty quickly.

Surplus is great for plinking, rough sighting in and general practice. If you know a hnadlaoder, he can pull the military bullet and substitute a hunting bullet or target bullet for mych better performance.

Milsurp ammo from anywhere isn't accurate enough for competitive shooting. The chances of finding more of the SA ammo you have are slim anyway. It won't hurt your barrel though. Shoot it, have fun then look into better ammo for competition shooting. Look into reloading.
