I was riding my bike last night and I thought...

"Copper lathed and Brass Lathed bullets cost too much".

Why can mild steel not be used?

Dirt cheap. Then paint it or coat it some how.

14% less density then copper.

So a 340gr of lathed copper would weigh 292 gr of the same dimension.

Thoughts?

Concerns?

Copper and brass are both much softer than barrel steel so they form around the rifling.

Artillery rounds are steel but engage the rifling with a plastic gas check or a brass driving band.

Yes I know ERFB has lugs....and a plastic gas check.

Nein.

M43 Ball and 7N6 are steel. So is 12.7 and 14.5mm

.358 Win Long COAL 292 gr Mild Steel of the M33 Ball Secant and Ogive profile could work in MG3's or Modified C6's to get through thick concrete Apts at range with Steel Nickel Casings.

C6 might not work with Carbon Fiber barrels.

MG3 can handle 8mm Length COAL.

Maybe C6 can work...don't know.

Fifty Caliber Shooting Association tried it years ago. Accuracy was there, bore life was dramatically reduced.
M43 bullets have coated soft steel jackets. Coated mild steel jackets are used in quite a lot of cartridges.
A coated steel jacket is not the same as a steel bullet.

M43 Formula shall do.

Barrels are highly disposable and cheap.

There are a lot of different bullets made with coated mild steel jackets. There is a world of difference between a jacketed bullet and one made of mild steel.
While essentially consumable, barrels are not cheap.

Yes.

Well we may be losing Mexico and Chile as Copper suppliers.

That leaves Canada and Peru.
