Anyone here use Mildots to calculate distance to game animals? What dimension of a deer would you use? Any hints or suggestion on how you do it. I was thinking a deer's chest height is approx 1/2 yard. So 500 divided by mildots should give me a deer's distance.

Best thing to do is head out with your scope and a rangefinder and determine the real distance that x# of md's represents. FWIW, I have this worked out for one of my scopes but it is not mil dot, and there is quite a difference between a young doe and a buck, or between a mule deer and a WT.

Remember that on most scopes these days the reticle is on the second plane, meaning the distance each dot represents is not constant. It will only represent 1 mil when set at a certain magnification. I am sure you understand that but many people do not.

I did some experimenting at the range with orange tape strips of various lengths to check out my measuring ability. It works pretty well if you can accurately estimate the actual height of the object. I know Leupold has some sort of Boone Crocket reticle that they use for ranging deer, but I've never seen one, and I'm not sure what aspect of a deer they use for the measurement.

the company that sells quickload also has a longrange shooting progie. They have an online demo to teach you to use mildots thats half decent. don't have the link right now. google it.
