I have a P320 and either plan to get the slide milled for a red dot or buy a separate gun thats already geared up for a dot (Walther Q5 match is currently top of the list if this is the direction I choose)

If I end up getting the P320 milled is there a cover that can be screwed on (i.e. fills the milled gap) to make the gun look as close as possible to factory again when the red dot isn't fitted?

I`m guessing not but figured I`d ask
 
..if you're thinking of using it IPSC Production div with the plate on instead of the optic then I don't believe it would qualify as the slide has been milled (plate or no plate....same applies of the possible new "Production Optics" IPSC div a year from now, only factory milled slides to accept optic will be legal)...as far as USPSA goes then again no for Production div, and yes for their Carry Optics either factory or non-factory milling of slides allowed

I`m not

If I do decide to compete I`ll get something else if it isn't suitable for my intended use
 
Anyone know where I might be able to get this done?

Tried Black Box but they can't make the cover plate and will only fit RMRs (I want to go Vortex for warranty reasons)
 
I was told by another smith who looked at my 320 that there wasn't enough metal on the top of the slide to mill in a spot for red dot...he said SIG did such a good job lightening up the slide they didn't leave enough meat on the bone...been watching for the new RX version to come out so I can buy one...I did order a plate that slides into the rear sight dovetail that holds an RMR and have been using that for about a year and half or so..ordered a couple from optics planet if someone is interested in one

I`d be curious to hear if you do make some progress with this

As it stands I can:

1) Try to graft something onto my P320 as discussed which I`m on the fence about
2) Trade it and buy a P320RX (I don't need 2) - problem solved
3) Keep the P320 as is and buy a Walther Q5 match which one of the site sponsors already offer with the red dot I fancy mounted
 
I'm thinking that if you had to slide milled out, had the holes tapped out etc you could easily have a pc of stainless cut to fit the opening, drill it and attach it and then mill it to match the original contour of the slide and voila...Robert's your dad's brother..
