Hey gang,

I am looking to get or make a Mauser K98 scoped rifle " sniper ". Obviously this being said I've looked into it. And I'm not looking for a safe queen but rather a shooter to be proud of but not brag about.

As I'm sure if you're reading this you know the sitch.

German Mauser k98 WW2 area in general..... good luck.

But do I really want to pay for a god knows what condition Russian Capture (I like them because they're 8mm Mauser with eagle markings still, but the stocks look like caca with Varnish on them, and i think current price is like 1500-1600 CAD + tax) Don't forget the Ammo now. 8MM, not the most common or cheapest from what I've Seen. (Not a hunter here, I shoot paper and things that go clank) so is this really the most logical ?

So here I am facing a decision. Israeli Mauser k98, won't have the cool eagle markings complete on it, which I'd love to own but not beat on, but it does have a nice crest on the receiver ( if it is a nice clear crest ). And what I believe is to be pulling me into the Israeli more. 7.62 NATO/.308. Have i found what I'm looking for? Unsure at this time. I just really loved the k98 stock with the medallion and sling, a scope with rings. If I find any of these options and the receiver is beautiful i would install a NDT mounting system to preserve what i can . If anyone has any opinions or can help complete my quest that would be great!

( i don't want to spend 2k on completing this but I feel like i would be spending half on the rifle alone, sadly, but a lot of not so nice at that price if i get lucky, even if Israeli )

Is this Foolish ?

Well, if you're looking for something cheaper, the Yugoslavians made up a lot of 98 snipers, right up to the 90s.

They used actions they had refurbed and mounted Zrack scopes/bases, while still retaining the original military style stocks.

Something else to consider, is that early in WWII, Germany did issue some civilian 98 mauser rifles with commercial hunting scopes. Usually the scopes were mounted on tall pillars or maybe side mounts and were detachable.

Very good condition Yugo mausers are considerably cheaper than even a mismatch clunker and they shoot very well for the most part, as well as being chambered in an authentic caliber, 8x57S

Yugoslavian k98 all the way. price will be cheaper, the same look as a German k98, as they only restamped German rifles for the most part.
reproduction side mount or high turret mount.

You must find repro zf41 and zf39 ( ww2 period) for try to have something similar rifle. Zf41 is more easy because she Don't touch to receiver just the rear sight. Zrak is a good solution too.

Marstar sold a great many Yugo capture K98's about 15+ years ago and the ones I saw were rebuilt to much better shooting condition than the Soviet refurbs. My guess is Yugoslavia was already "Mauser" country before they acquired them and they knew how to do a good job. Most (but not all) of them have a Yugo crest put on the receiver ring, so it would be no great loss to cover this with a reproduction turret mount. The difficult part with the turret mount is it has to be attached with both screws and solder. I'd love to find a good resource that explains how to do this.

I am currently in the process of building a high turret sniper. I have all the parts, all I need to do it take them to the smith. I think the avenues discussed are a better option if you are not looking to break the bank. My current total is 2.7k, 1.1k for the rifle (BYF 44), 1.4k for the scope (wartime production Ajack 4x90), and 200 for the mounts.

well now I'm torn y'all . I'm good either way. I think I've found a good specimen. I'm unsure of how correct it would be ( I dont think it correct at all.... Israeli with a Laminate stock ) looks good thought. Finish is probably a little rough . Too bad its not a purchase in person . But its kind of pulling me into it . I probably will put an ATI NDT mount system to put rings and scope so I wont damage what the rifle is to somewhat preserve it. I hear it'll stay true. Unsure though.... what do you guys think . Mind you staying with the Israeli clearly for the price of ammo alone. ( and I hear the Yugo's were so/so, nothing to brag about. )

I think its pretty.

New here. Unsure if picture will add. only lets me add URL pic so id post the nice bore it has.

If there are other options all I'm all ears. I'd go with 8mm mauser but the ammo prices are much for paper shooting.

edit . my picture doesn't post . basically is a israeli mauser with a laminate stock and it has the firing pin medallion on it with the usual k98 sling cutout in the stock. bore looks decent not pitting or anything . would love to get your opinions on it , Just a fat C-hair over 1k CAD.... unsure values of israeli mauser .... especially with a stock like that

Dear Tony, you are late in the game. Three years ago yugo refurbished k98 and israeli conversion was 500-600$. Now any junk have a asking price of 1000$ plus.

Yeah the high turret snipers are awesome...

Hope the OP doesnt want to travel to Europe with his invention. There, he will get in jail for owning/displaying insignias...
