here are a few more details.

went to one of my little hiddy holes where no one else seems to go because it is thick and steep and visibility is limited, and where i have jumped some very nice bucks in the past. i climbed pretty much straight up for a while and then started to go sidehill, carefully glassing each gully and point that i came too. the bush was VERY noisy, no snow and no rain. saw a smallish 2x3 buck. and then nothing else. then on my way down the mountain, came across another buck, i was quite surprised to see him there as i had let my guard down. i saw that he was a 4 point on one side and wondered if i should take him as there are bigger bucks on the mountain. but then i thought about my elk hunting this year, turning down easy shots at cows in the hopes of getting a bull....ended up with neither. and on the plus side it was all downhill from where the buck was.

so at around 60 yards i took an offhand shot with the mauser. the load was a 200 grain nosler partition in igman brass pushed by enough RL 15 to start at 2300 fps. yes i know that a 98k can handle more, but i also use the load in a portugese M904/39 and i see no need to push these open sighted old rifles.

the old 8x57 gets the job done, i have now taken 4 deer and an elk with rifles so chambered.

Sorry for the slight OT MiG, how do you find that Igman brass?

the brass is fine, i have reloaded some of it 6 times with no problems. a few of the primer pockets are a little tight but no big deal.

if you mean where did i find it, i bought the loaded ammo at milarm in edmonton.

Thanks, I have kept loads of it, just not reloaded it yet and heard various 'opinions' of the stuff. But it looks pretty good to me.

Anyhow, nice to see a good ol' milsurp still pulling its weight! Congrats

i can't speak from experience but from what i have read on the 'net the common problem with igman brass seems to be with the 6.5x55.

if you are unsure about it, i will gladly dispose of it for you.

My main gripe wit the igman is that once in a blue moon, the primer flash hole is a bit off. Not a huge issue - I've never had a case where it mattered much, but I've heard the odd report of broken decapping pins - always third hand.

Personally I use Igman for most of my 8x57 and 54R brass ;)

Nice Buck thar, Mig.. Did he drop on the shot or get a few steps....first? Maybe Skippy should lend you his G 33/40 Seeing as your Mountain Troopen it... eh:rolleyes:

My VZ24 is my back-up for when I fall on my head and knock my scoped BAR all to heck, like I did 3 weeks ago. I haven't dropped anything with it but there's still 2 weeks left.:)

well the ol enfield is still puttin meat in the freezer
this one is my BSA 1911 sportered no1 mkIII .303..... I think my 43 Lithgow will be jealous as she had to stay home in the safe on this trip :D

Two whitetailed deer bagged so far this season with my sporterized Husquavarna M38 6.5 this year so far. First was taken by my son at 110 yards and was a 165lb field dressed 6 point buck(heart shot). Second was my wife's 126 pound field dressed doe taken at 70 yards( neck) . Both taken with 100 grain Hornady spitzers on top of IMR 3031. The buck dropped in 50 feet and the doe collapsed on the spot. I have pictures of my young fellow with his buck but have never posted pics on here before. I'll see what I can do about posting one though.
My Mom and Dad also use a sporterized M38 and both bagged their bucks this season in the first week. First was a 6 pointer dropped on his scrape while actually pawing by my Dad and a spikehorn dropped by my Mom from a stand. Not sure of the actual details on either deer but both dropped in their tracks. They shoot Rano 159 grain round nose soft point commercial ammo as well as 159 grain Norma. I only deer hunt with 3 guns and two are Milsurps.
I usually use my custom built M38 done by Clyde Corbett's guns in Liverpool, which certainly doesn't look like a milsurp anymore but I still class it as one. I also use a Polish M44 sometimes as well when I don't need a scope. Both are VERY accurate guns but I have to admit, the Swede is my favorite gun ever. It is so deadly accurate and easy on the shoulder. Gotta love those Milsurps! There are many milsurps out there that can easily match and even outshoot some very expensive commercial guns at a fraction of the cost. GRIN Thanks for posting the pics of the bucks fellas. They look awesome.
