Milsurp price insanity

Saved this one from Bubba. It came from the boonies of NL, well neglected, covered in the old dried-up cosmoline, full of rust, dust and other things from the past. Its bore was like a sewer pipe and even good cleaning didn't do any good. The good news is that it was purchased for a symbolic fee, with a box of vintage ammo included, and its bore was not counterbored. Big thanks to Jason from Complete Gun Repair, who helped restore this rifle to its original beauty. Firing a box of ammo cleared its bore to a shining glory! This an M-24 'Lotta' with Bohler-Stahl barrel, of course. I only saw a few of these for sale on the CGN a decade and a half ago for like 300 bucks or so.
The moral is that these things are still out there waiting to get rescued.

nice these are not common

mine has a SIG stepped barrel :) paid $150 for it many years ago.

It's not the prices that have gone up, it's your currency has lost purchasing power because they are diluting its worth by simply printing greater, and greater amounts every year simply to bribe voters.

Prices on everything have gone up. And more people have entered the milsurp market. And a dwindling supply of milsurps.

I just tried to browse that sfrc auction site....what a bag of #### that is to navigate. Like 90% of the stuff is just new in package Chinese cheap junk they have in the store, on auction at auction prices, ie way too high. Seems sketchy as hell.

I too browsed and noticed I should have bought a couple crates of SVT40's back in the day. Weren't they like 500 bucks a few years ago? [Now I sound like everyone else in this thread :p ] I remember when they were seemingly everywhere but the reading I did said they could be quite picky with their gas settings and decided against it

Not only that, many of them had anywhere from sewer pipes, to badly pitted to frost and a few with excellent bores.

The few with excellent bores were the last ones to come into Canada, from what I remember.

You either love the SVT platform or you don't care for it.

I never kept one for longer than a few days, sometimes, less than an hour.

Seems the prices on everything have gone up, and after 2014 with the first Russian annexation in Ukraine, we saw a cessation (or drastic reduction) of guns and ammo coming out of Ukraine. The milsurp has officially dried up for good, with only dribs and drabs of poorly kept stuff coming out of African countries.

I'm glad I got stuff when I did, so at the very least I can horse trade as my tastes change over time, and I have enough ammo to shoot casually over years of time. Shame the newer generation can't really participate, but there were always going to be limited quantities.

Jump on the $350 Carcano's while you can, because once those are gone, that's basically it. From here on in, people will be restoring bubba's handi-work and reloading.

As for the SVT-40, I love mine and am glad I kept it. I love it for its history and its sleek design. The bore is dark in the grooves but the rifling is sharp, and it will print 6 inch groups at 200m with surplus, which impressed me. When we were getting them for $375, Americans were paying $900 US and up. Can't really complain.

Swede M96 on EE for $1900…

I recall being at the big spring Calgary gun show maybe 4 or 5 years ago. There was a guy trying to sell a Swede for a non-negotiable $1000. People were shocked at that price and openly mocked him for asking such a crazy price. Some people thought that he had a screw loose.

I think it boils down to a few different things, in no particular order.

- Low supply.
- Steady, or slightly increasing demand (due to more collectors and people entering the hobby).
- Far fewer sources of collectibles, gun shows are mostly no longer running, etc.
- Higher prices state side push prices up here.
- Inflation.
- Covid, many people want cool toys to make them happy.

Also, quality is diminishing. It is getting more difficult to find higher quality items, and so when a nice collectible comes up, people are paying more than before.

Lastly, not many collectors in Canada use CGN, so most people do not have a website to buy, trade and sell. Their only options are the stores, auctions or word of mouth.

Let us Not forget the PROHIBITION of More than 1,500 types of firearms , making ANY non restricted , or unlisted more desirable. btw-I feel so Damn safe --- but just Can't get out of the stupid habit of locking doors at night! yippee

My insanity rifle just showed up the other day. Pro tip, don't throw in a "just for funzies" bid on rock island auctions. In fact just avoid it all together. The worst part now is doing it and realizing how easy it is to bid on and get IRG to import it.
