Mimi: Last Garand has a problem

In the past, I've tended to grease those retaining hooks (in the M14 trigger group) and the latching barrels/nubs in the Grand trigger group, then I use the rubber mallet. :D

Wood stocks can only compress with time. Surprise, surprise! :)

If you are concerned, then judiciously shave, try fit, shave, try fit, shave and try fit once again. It's a labour of love!

Cheers and keep helping them noobies out there!

Rather than inletting the trigger housing deeper in the stock I would first try a trigger guard with worn lugs. The guard is not too far away from closing and this may make the difference. And yes, a bit of grease on the locking lugs is always good.

File down the the stock where the sides of the bottom plate of the trigger group housing rest , this will cause the trigger group to sit deeper in the stock , go slow and test fit till the trigger guard can be locked down by hand , i had to do this on all my rebuilds using Boyds stocks .
