I personally wouldn't want a semi for hunting, but assuming I did in the situation you've described, I'd go with a browning BAR in 308. When you wing a running deer with a snap shot, you want something that can reach the vitals even if the deer is running straight away from you. (Not advocating a texas heart shot, I'm just saying it's better than risking losing a wounded deer)
