Min Caliber for Yotes

.257AI

JESUS CHRIST!!!,....thats awesome!

Is the 257ai the same as 257 roberts or weatherby mag?

Really depends on whether you want to keep the hide or not. If you're not concerned or if you want something for BG then I would concern yourself with what you would want for that.
Strictly for yotes: 222, 223, 243...12gauge if you want to get up close and personal.

Agree on the 1st part but when I get pissed at them I grab the 10ga browning gold with no. 4 buckshot. Then it is Hide ?? what Hide:D:D

A .22 rimfire in the vitals will kill a coyote - sooner or later. If one got close enough while all I had on me was a .22 rimfire, I'd try it if I thought I had a good shot. But I'll be surprised if a live coyote ever gets that close to me.

When I go looking for them, I take a .223Remington (sometimes combined with a 12 gauge in a Savage 24F,) and I think if you set out to hunt them, you should use a centrefire calibre.

I agree about the choice of bullet in a center fire, 243 works well but choose you bullet if you want to save the hide. Or maybe your a good seamstress.:D I saw a coyote shot yesterday with 223- 62 gr. HP hornady factory ammo, punched a small hole in and out, took two rounds too put him down, 3 coyotes shot with a 204 -32 gr sierra`s dropped in their tracks no exit. Bullet choice matters with varmints as well as big game, We`re working up some loads with the 58 gr. hornady vmax in the 243, will be interesting to see how they perform. I wouldn`t use a rimfire unless shot was under 100 yards, just my opinion.

Answering this question in terms of someone that wants to:
1. Kill humanely
2. Harvest the pelt

Standard rounds would include:
204 Ruger, 222, 223, 243 (maybe 25-06).

My opinion is the .17 centerfire would be the minimum for coyotes. Don't have one but understand that they are lights-out-right-now up to 200 yards which makes it an ideal calling rifle.

I have and use both a .204 and a 22-250. Very similar ballistics but find the .204 to be just as effective up to 300 yards with less pelt damage so use it for calling. The 22-250 is my go-to for situations that might require shots up to 500 yds. Like when the yotes seem to be call shy and are hanging up waaaaay out there.

For foxes? I quit shooting them with the 22-250 and 204 cause I was just making a mess of them. I would think a 17 or 22 mag rimfire under 100 yards would be ideal. If a fox shows up on a stand it usually isnt difficult to get it in under 100 yds.

I have a 17 Rem Fire Ball and it's an honest 300 yard coyote rifle. Broad side shot is like you turned off a switch. They drop where they stand.

While I have shot coyotes with a 22LR, it is only because that is what I've had at the time. A .22 cal center fire works far better. .222, .223, .22-250 all work very well, particularly if you handload them hot.

On the other hand, I have used rifles as big as a .30-378 to shoot a coyote. If you see a coyote on the farm, you use whatever you have in the truck. Bigger bullets kill them dead on the spot, but the hide is literally shredded and rendered useless.

I have seen pictures of coyotes from Ontario that look to be small to medium Wolf size. I think for them out there or Wolves here a .243 might be a better minimum.

It's a BS myth..... although our yotes are a bit bigger the top weights are around 60 pounds and that is rare.... the 3 I shot last year were all between 40 and 50 lbs......

I hand load a 40gr vmax in a 22 hornet pushing it out between 2800 - 3000 fps depending on powder and load. I shoot yoties out to 200 yards. oh sh^t I forgot where I am writting, sorry sorry your right nothing smaller than 22-250 oh make that
a 7m Rem Mag for yoties.

I have used most of the 22 center fires and they all work well..same as anything, bullet choice and shot placement. I remember shooting a mover at about 125..hit him right in the mid ships with a 50 gr Nosler BT..he jumped straight up and turned and bit at the wound..then fell over...Loved the 22-250 and that bullet..shoots like a laser..While stationed out at Baldy Hughes in PG, BC..I used a 243 with 70gr HPs..shredded em..so I loaded up 90 gr solids ...still shredded em cause I didnt crank down the velocity. Lesson learned.. So today..I have three favs...a Tikka Varmint in 223...a Varminter in 22-250 and my newest and most fun is a Sako in 17 Rem, a 25 gr Berger at 3975 fps, again..if you have fur in the scope..thats where it hits...bang flop..EXCEPT..at 200m on the shoulder ball or joint..they dont go anywhere..but flop around a little. Pencil hole in..no exit.. Crows = black snow..Would only use a rim fire if thats all I had..If you cant see any Coyotes..there are to many..if you can see em..there are WAY to many...
