BEARS:
A number of moose camps in the Minden area have been broken into by black bears.
I just returned from ours. We were OK, but the camp we passed on the way in had the place run through. He tore the door off the fridge, wrecked a few cupboards, generally smashed whatever remotely smelled of food, and left.
Entry was by smashing the front door. Clawed out a panel in the door.
He also tore the trim off two of the windows.

In our case, the bears had been there, they had dumped our incinerator, left teeth marks in a few cans, but otherwise we were OK.

The Minden dump has apparently got between 40 and 50 black bears visiting it. This according to locals.

Conditions.

The bush is tinder dry. They have not had any rain for some time.
I'm only an hour south, and we've had plenty, put they are super dry, and this may be contributing to the bear issue.
The main creeks, and ponds are low, and all the normal wet holes are dry as dust.

They must have had lots of rain earlier though, because the fern growth and underbrush is crazy thick and tall.
Ferns are from four to five feet in height. Very hard to see where you are going if your on the lead quad clearing a trail.
Guy I was with dumped his machine twice, and this is at dead slow speeds.
You just can't see the holes in front of you.
He passed me when I made a wrong turn on another trail, and I had to thank him later for that. Shortly after he passed me he ran over a nest of yellow jackets, and left his machine so I could get them off him.

That was quite an episode, with both of us swatting the stinging little bastards. He got stung seven or eight times, and I got it once. Even had to get them off the dog.

Moose sign;
Hard to say, it was so dry that even on the trail, we were raising dust with the machines. Ground is real hard.
But we did see some fresh moose dung, and some decent track near the remaining wet spots.

You seen camps up north John?
A sheet of plywood laying in front of windows with a zillion nails faceing up seems to deter them pretty good :D
Course down here you be up for a liable suit if some-one ever stepped on one

Actually, we DO use nail strips in front of doors and windows.
Appropriately signed for the vandals.

Something like "If you came here to break in, please step here"

Bob :

My sister and a couple of cousins have cottages a little south of Minden, and bear have been a problem all summer. On my bass fishing weekend, I had a rifle around - just in case.

A buddy and I are going up next week to see if we can thin them out a bit.

If I were to shoot a 700 pounder, I have no idea how I'd move it. :bangHead:

Is it possible to hire gun bearers and porters in Minden?:D

Moose season, ATV's are everywhere.
Outside of moose season, you can probably get a local to do it.
The people I know there have full time jobs, and are likely not available.
But I bet if you ask around it won't be hard to find help. Jobs are not that easy to come by up there in the fall.
