my brother-in-law is in love with the mini-14, but is hesitant to spend upwards of 1000 bucks on one. i suggested he buy the mini-30, and look for a used one to cushion the blow on his wallet. i figured the 7.62 would be the way to go, given the availability of surplus ammo for making noise, and the option of using it for hunting (not being a .223). any opinions on which model he should look for? what should he expect to pay for a used one?

I just bought a barely used one for $850 from a gun shop. You may want to get a Wolf spring kit for it to help with reliable firing of surplus ammo. The kit is about $14 U.S. The little I have fired it you should be able to hit the large side of a barn.

mini 14/30

I have owned a mini14 for almost 20 years,it goes bang when I pull the trigger and untill the mag runs out and like the posts say they are not all that accurate and the mini30 even less so and most of the ammo availible for the mini 30 is not acceptable for hunting, much more game will either be shot wrong or missed. That being said Mini14 target with the Heavy barrel is the way to go for hunting small game, coyotes and pig if I am in the Maythorpe area, nothing larger, I use mine primarily for coyotes that just happen to find themselves within a 100m of me. For this reason I am trading mine up for the heavy barrel. They are worth the money for a semi auto you can go into the woods with.
