Mini-14 (another post)

Dukeoflawnchair, that 820b is not stainless (I wish). I picked it up at a gun show for cheap from an old prospector who carried it for decades up in the mountains north of Vancouver. Blueing was worn all over, wood was rough, metal was dinged so I figured what the hell and burned through half the accessories in my dremel tool kit putting that shine on the steel and refinished the wood with true-oil. Think it turned out not bad. Action is solid and shoots nice. Will probably slap on some Gun-Cote when I find someone who can bead-blast it for me.
Also, I haven't found any Benekee slugs around. Pulled that pic off the web from a US sight.

What's your motive, bear defense or hunting? The 7.62x39 is usually compared to a 30-30, but slightly smaller in the hole-punching department. Lots of people will agree that it is sufficient to kill a bear with a well-placed shot, but sufficient usually isn't best to bet on in terms of defense...or hunting for that matter. I've only ever handled one Norinco SKS, and my humble opinion is that this particular rifle isn't sufficiently accurate or reliable. Didn't jam often, but often enough to rather not potentially just piss off a bear with only a bayonet.

Lot of folks who swear by their SKS's, but that's just my experience...

Rumor has it that Canadian Rangers up north are still issed No4Mk1 Lee Enfields for bears because they're of the few guns that don't muck up when half frozen...has anybody else heard this? Respectable sporters usually go cheaper than SKS's...

Couch-Gator: Good deal, them 820's. Out of stark coincidence, I'll be doing some prospecting myself in the mountains north of Vancouver...though probably a bit further east.

You black gun guys are not allowed in the hunting section... we use you guys for bear bait.:p
We just duct tape you to a tree and give you a mini or an SKS to attract the bears.:onCrack:
I'm serious.:runaway:

The best defense weapon is whatever you have in your hands at the time, no matter if the adversary is human or four legged.
I don't go puposely into the bush looking to defend myself from anything, because I don't have to.
Use your brains before your rifle.....

Mini-14, especially in 'tactical' configuration is a perfect bear defense gun.

It's nice and streamlined, so when the bear crams it up your ass you hardly feel it at all:D

>223

Go to nunavut or the NWT and you will see locals who shoot polar bears on a regular basis with .223. I myself would like something larger.

A .223 would be good to shoot your friend in the foot so you could out run him, and the bear will get him instead. :D

Kidding of course. :p
